Kaieteur News – Seven-year-old Michael Hyderkhan, who was fatally injured after a goalpost collapsed on him, died as a result of lacerated kidneys and blunt trauma to the back, a post-mortem examination has confirmed.
Hyderkhan, a Grade Two pupil of Swan Primary School and a resident of Swan Village, lost his life on Friday when a goalpost toppled onto him at the Swan ball field along the Soesdyke-Linden Highway.
The incident occurred around 20:00 hrs during a football tournament under floodlights at the community ground. Michael had accompanied his family to the event to support his father, who was among the players participating in the competition.
According to reports, at the conclusion of the match, several children entered the field and began playing near one of the goalposts. Michael was among them when the structure suddenly collapsed, striking him and pinning him to the ground.
Persons at the venue immediately raised an alarm and rushed to assist the injured child. He was quickly transported to the Diamond Regional Hospital for emergency medical treatment. However, despite efforts by medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries approximately 30 minutes after arriving at the facility.
A post-mortem examination conducted on Wednesday at the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home in Georgetown confirmed that the child died as a result of lacerations to both kidneys and trauma to the back.
Michael’s mother, Shenella Hyderkhan, said that at the time of the incident, the goalpost fell onto his stomach, leaving him trapped beneath it in pain. “I’m really trying to cope with the loss of my son,” the grieving mother said.
In a previous interview, she suggested that the condition of the ground may have contributed to the collapse of the goalpost. She believes the sand-filled surface of the field, combined with wet conditions, may have caused the base of the structure to become unstable.
“I think the sand was wet and the post sink forward and fall,” she explained.
The child’s body has since been handed over to his family, and funeral services are scheduled to be held on Sunday.
