Linden Family loses over $25M after Easter Monday fire destroys home
The recently refurbished home once occupying a family of five completely destroyed.
Kaieteur News – A family of five has been left devastated after losing their home of more than 20 years in an early morning fire on Easter Monday at Lot 43 West Watooka, Wismar, Linden.
The blaze completely destroyed the three-bedroom concrete and wooden structure, leaving millions of dollars in losses.
The fire reportedly occurred around 02:00hrs when neighbours observed smoke emanating from the building. At the time, the occupants – Natasha Allicock, her husband, and their three children, ages 22, 20, and 5, were not at home. The family had travelled to Belladrum, Berbice, to spend the Easter holiday.
Their trip was abruptly cut short after they received a distressing phone call informing them that their house was on fire. By the time they were alerted and emergency responders were contacted, the blaze had already engulfed the building, leaving little to nothing salvageable.
Natasha Allicock, who is said to be deeply shaken by the tragedy, estimates that the family has suffered losses exceeding $25 million. The loss is particularly painful as the home had recently undergone extensive renovations.
According to her brother, Tavon Allicock, who spoke on her behalf, the family had invested heavily in upgrading the property just last year. The renovations included a complete transformation of the interior, installation of air conditioning, and expansion of the structure.
He explained that prior to leaving for the Easter weekend, Natasha took extra precautions to secure the home.
“Before leaving, she ensured that everything was in order. She locked the doors, unplugged all appliances, and even turned back several times to double-check that everything was okay,” he said.
The family had attended church in Linden on Friday morning, before continuing on to Berbice for the remainder of the holiday.
However, their time away quickly turned tragic.
“We received a call early Monday morning from a neighbour informing us that the house was on fire. By the time the fire service was contacted, there was not much that could be saved. Everything was already destroyed,” Tavon related.
He described the loss as heart-breaking, noting the emotional toll it has taken on his sister and her family.
“My sister recently refurbished her home. She completely transformed it, added air conditioning, and extended the house. They’ve been living there for over 20 years, and only last year they completed those renovations,” he said.
Despite the immense loss, the family is grateful that no one was at home at the time of the fire, sparing them from potential injury or loss of life.
The family is currently staying temporarily at Natasha Allicock’s mother’s home nearby as they begin the difficult process of rebuilding.
They are now appealing to the public for assistance to help them recover from the disaster.
“We would be grateful for any support. Donations of furniture, clothing, or any other household items would be very helpful. She lost everything,” Tavon said.
