Kaieteur News – President Irfaan Ali said Guyana’s passport services are expected to go online within the next month, as government moves to modernise and streamline access.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday on the sidelines of an event at Camp Ayanganna, the head-of-state explained that several components are still being finalised to ensure a smooth transition.
“We have Guyanese all over the world… they are now completing that relationship, and within a month, we should be closer to that,” he said, referring to arrangements involving biometric processing systems used internationally.
The move forms part of a broader digital transformation push by the government. According to the Department of Public Information, the initiative is aimed at improving efficiency, strengthening security, and enhancing service delivery.
President Ali noted that key systems are already in place, including the border control system, which went live in January 2025, and the e-passport system, launched in February.
The new e-passports, equipped with advanced security features, are designed to improve international travel while aligning Guyana with global aviation standards.
“We have to ensure that our system is strong enough to identify threats and proactively respond to them,” the president said, highlighting the role of digital systems in national security.
The upcoming online passport application platform is expected to reduce long lines at passport offices by allowing users to book appointments and access services through decentralised centres.
Beyond passports, the government is also advancing digitisation in other areas, including electronic birth and death certificates, as part of efforts to improve transparency and speed up public services.
