Kaieteur Sports – Guyana’s men’s Masters hockey teams began their 2026 World Masters Hockey Indoor World Cup campaign with mixed fortunes, as the Over-40 side secured an impressive opening win while the Over-50 team suffered a heavy defeat.
The Over-40 squad got off to a flying start, defeating Wales 8–4 in a strong all-round performance. They maintained control for most of the contest, keeping a narrow lead before pulling away to seal a comfortable victory. The result puts them in a positive position as they look to build momentum in the tournament.
In contrast, the Over-50 team endured a difficult opening encounter, falling 10–1 to England Masters. The loss leaves them under pressure early in the competition, with a tough challenge ahead against Canada.
Guyana entered this year’s tournament determined to improve on their previous showing, where they finished second. With ambitions of going one better this time, the teams are eager to prove themselves against some of the world’s top Masters sides.
The tournament is being held from March 26 to 31 at the David Ross Sports Village at the University of Nottingham in England, featuring top indoor hockey talent across men’s and women’s age categories ranging from 35 to 65.
Looking ahead, the Over-40 team will face France, while the Over-50 side take on Canada in their second encounter as both teams continue their campaigns today, Friday. The Women Over-40 also face Alliance at 10:00 am in their opening clash.
