Kaieteur Sports – Excitement is building in East Berbice as the Flying Ace Cycle Club prepares to host its Annual Jagan’s Memorial Cycle Road Race this Sunday, March 29. The event, a staple on the local cycling calendar, is expected to draw some of the country’s top cyclists for a day of intense competition and celebration of the sport.
Cyclists will assemble at Freedom House Building in New Amsterdam for an 8:30 start, before setting off on a challenging route that is expected to test endurance and speed. The race will proceed along the Corentyne corridor to the vicinity of the No. 51 Police Station before riders make the turn, heading back to Babu-John for what promises to be a thrilling finish.
This year’s edition will feature six concurrent races, offering opportunities for cyclists across multiple categories to showcase their talent. The marquee General Classification (Elite) race will see riders battling for top honours, with prizes awarded to the first six finishers. Meanwhile, the Veterans Open category will reward the top four riders, while the Over-50 division will see prizes going to the top three competitors.
Young talent will also be on display, with junior cyclists competing for podium finishes, while the Category 4 and Ladies races will award prizes to the top three finishers in each division. Adding to the excitement, prime points will be contested at various stages along the route, ensuring aggressive racing from start to finish.
To facilitate participation, transportation will be provided for cyclists traveling from Georgetown. Interested riders are required to gather at Freedom House on Robb Street before 5:30 a.m., with departure scheduled for 5:45 a.m. sharp on race day.
The Flying Ace Cycle Club is encouraging cycling enthusiasts and supporters to come out in their numbers to witness the action and support the athletes. Beyond the competition, the event serves as a tribute to the late President Cheddi Jagan, commemorating his legacy at his home village.
