Kaieteur Sports – As the race intensifies to determine the quarterfinalists, organisers of the Hamilton Green Inter Ward/Village Nine-a-Side Knockout Football Tournament have introduced an exciting new incentive for any team desirous of being part of this year’s exhibition matches.
With the round-of-16 fixtures already confirmed, exhibition teams now have an additional opportunity to compete for a $50,000 cash prize during the quarterfinal stage of the competition. The quarterfinals are scheduled for March 20 at the Plaisance Ground on the East Coast of Demerara.
This weekend’s action will decide the eight teams advancing to that stage. A total of eight matches are scheduled, with four games on Saturday, March 14, and the remaining four on Sunday, March 15, all at the same venue.
The tournament champions will walk away with the top prize of $500,000, while the second- and third-place finishers will earn $200,000 and $100,000, respectively.
Due to the overwhelming interest and support for the competition, tournament coordinator Lennox Arthur has also introduced a fourth-place prize of $50,000, further increasing the overall rewards associated with the event.
From an initial pool of 32 teams, only 16 teams remain in contention following the completion of the opening round. Teams still in the championship hunt include West Side Alliance, Zeelugt, Buxton Stars, Golden Stars, Mocha, Plaisance, Victoria, Mahaica, Melanie, No.1 All Stars, Liliendaal, Black Pearl, Pouderoyen ‘A’, Pouderoyen ‘B’, Team Order and Discipline, and Beavers.
Among the notable round-of-16 fixtures are Buxton Stars vs Order and Discipline, Pouderoyen ‘B’ vs Golden Stars, Mocha vs Black Pearl, and Victoria vs No.1 All Stars.
Matches on both days will kick off at 7:00 pm. Following the round-of-16 clashes, the quarterfinals will be played on the following Friday, while the semifinals and grand final are set for April 2.
The event is supported by former Mayor of Georgetown Hamilton Green and coordinated by former national football coach Lennox Arthur. Several corporate sponsors have also hopped onboard to ensure a successful hosting of the annual nine-a-side knockout tournament.
