(Kaieteur News) – Dem boys were just standing by de roadside watching de morning traffic do what traffic in Guyana does best—stop. Not slow down, not pause for a light, but come to a full, dignified halt. Dem Boys scratch dem heads and said, “Whah happen up de road dis time?” Surely, something serious? An accident? A cow in de middle of de street? Or maybe a politician walking his dog?
But no. After five long minutes of honking horns, muttered curses, and a collective rethinking of life choices, a young lady finally emerged from a car. She strutted into her workplace like she was de CEO of punctuality itself. Dem boys squint and realize: it was just her boyfriend dropping her off. They stopped to chat inside their car in the middle of the road, unconcerned about the confusion they were causing behind them. And to think it was already after 8:00 a.m.—she’s technically late, but apparently, the traffic’s her runway.
And isn’t this what mornings in Guyana are all about? The art of holding up traffic for absolutely nothing, the subtle competition of who can block de road with the most style, and de unspoken rule that pedestrians always have priority—especially if deh late for work. People jaywalk like dem paid by de minute, others double-park like dem own de asphalt, and some even treat traffic lights like optional decoration.
By de time de lady disappeared inside, de road slowly breathed again. But de memory lingered. Guyana’s roads is a place where common sense takes a holiday, patience is an endangered species, and people holding up traffic, chatting, laughing, and proving that sometimes de journey is more entertaining than de destination.
Only in Guyana, indeed.
Talk half. Leff half.
