Money Nah Talking to Poor People
(Kaieteur News) – Oil come to Guyana and nuff people talking ’bout prosperity. But somehow prosperity behaving like one shy young lady—everybody hearing about she, but de small man can’t seem to meet she.
De economy growing faster than a bushfire in dry season, but de small man still growing only one thing—he grocery bill.
Dem wah doing good and mekking it big are those who already rich or who find demself in de right sector—construction, transportation, logistics and all dem businesses where oil money passing through like a VIP at cricket match.
But de small man still gat to hustle. He getting up early, going to work, paying bills and wondering how come de country producing more money but his pocket producing less. And things ain’t getting easier. He can’t even ride he bicycle to work in peace. Every time he hear a vehicle coming from behind, he got to turn around and check if he going to reach work or become part of somebody’s accident report.
Then he enter de supermarket. Lord have mercy! De small man does walk into de supermarket with a shopping list and walk out with a receipt. Sometimes he does look at de receipt and wonder if he accidentally buy a refrigerator.
Everything going up—rice, chicken, cooking oil, flour, vegetables. Even de things that used to be cheap now behaving like luxury goods.
He see a bed he want to buy and tell himself, “Well, at least I could sleep comfortable.”
Then he see de price. He decide that de old mattress still got some life left in it. He see a vanity. He like it. He price it. He decide de mirror on de wall good enough.
Because oil money might be flowing, but it ain’t flowing into everybody pocket. Because when he check he wallet, it thinner than a pointer. De rich creaming off plenty of de benefits of de new oil economy. Dem buying property, expanding businesses, upgrading vehicles and finding new ways to turn opportunity into money. Dem meeting investors, wining and dining with people in high places and smiling all de way to de bank.
Meanwhile, de poor man smiling—but he smiling because he finally manage to pay de light bill before GWI come with another bill. Oil might have changed Guyana. But for de small man, de biggest change so far is that everything costing more. Money talking plenty in Guyana.
But somehow, money nah talking to poor people.
