(Kaieteur News) – The Guyana Water Inc. (GWI) will spend approximately $71 million for the installation of water supply systems at the new Jawalla Secondary School in Region Seven, and the Kopinang Secondary School in Region Eight.
This is according to a recent invitation for bids issued by the water service company. According to the tender notice, the project at Jawalla is estimated at $35 million while the Kopinang project is $36 million.
Bids are expected to be opened on March 24, 2026 at the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB).
Commissioning similar systems across various hinterland communities, Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation, Deodat Indar stated that the provision of safe, clean water is a fundamental part of the government’s broader vision of closing the gap between the coast and the hinterland, with the aim of achieving 100 per cent access to potable water nationwide.
It was recently disclosed that construction of the new Jawalla school is progressing.
The education ministry reported that the $231.9 million secondary school is expected to be completed by September this year.
At a recent visit to the school site, Minister of Education Sonia Parag said the new facility will play a critical role in easing overcrowding and will provide improved learning conditions for students transitioning from primary top.
“It’s very important that we have students from the primary top come into this school and occupy this space. We want to remove the overcrowding that’s happening at schools right now; that’s one of the main reasons why we embarked on this project,” the education minister said.
The Ministry of Education will continue to closely monitor the project to ensure the school is delivered on time.
The school, being constructed by Sheriff Construction, will cater for up to 250 students and will be equipped with facilities including Chemistry, Biology, Physics, and Information Technology laboratories, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) laboratories, a Home Economics room, library space, teachers’ quarters, spacious classrooms and a small dormitory.
Meanwhile, the new Kopinang Secondary is also being constructed by Sheriff Construction for $199 million.
The school will accommodate approximately 250 students upon completion and will feature modern amenities, including an information technology lab, and a library, ensuring a conducive learning environment for students, as well as admin and teaching blocks.
