(Kaieteur News) – Businessman Riyad Ahmad, brother of Ameir Ahmad, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Sheriff Security, has been arrested in connection with a February 11 accident in Kitty, Georgetown, which left a 63-year-old woman seriously injured.
Charges are expected to be laid against him.
The arrest was confirmed by Regional Commander (ag) Deputy Commissioner Simon McBean during an interview with Kaieteur News on Monday. “Mr. Ahmad is in custody. Investigations are ongoing; they will be completed shortly and charges will be made,” McBean stated.
He added that the Guyana Police Force is currently awaiting a medical certificate in relation to the driver. Once that is received, the matter will be placed before the court.
The victim, Waveney Fernandes, was injured while walking home from work at the intersection of David and Alexander streets in Kitty. Reports indicate that the vehicle driven by Ahmad allegedly jumped a stop sign, first colliding with another car before striking Fernandes.
Specific details surrounding the incident remain undisclosed.
Kaieteur News understands that Ahmad was allegedly heavily under the influence at the time of the accident and left the woman lying motionless on the roadway.
Fernandes is now confined to her bed with a broken leg and arm. She said she has received no follow-up care since being discharged from the hospital.
On Sunday, Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed and Member of Parliament Odessa Primus visited Fernandes at her home.
During the visit, Fernandes recounted the accident and explained that she is unable to work because of her injuries.
“No therapy. Nobody didn’t come at the home. They just rush me out of the hospital. No social worker, no nurse, no therapist,” she said. “Right now, my foot is swollen from the leg to my toes. It’s not easy for me, it’s terrible.”
The 63-year-old explained that she normally works two jobs but is now unable to work due to her injuries. She also stated that she has not been contacted by the businessman involved, nor has she received any visit or communication from any government official.
Up to press time, the Guyana Police Force had not issued an official statement regarding the incident.
