(Kaieteur News) – The Ministry of Health on Saturday disclosed that it has a state-of-the-art 3D printer that was donated by Precision Valve Automation (PVA) through its partnership with Northwell Health. The printer will serve to enhance its prosthetic services.

The equipment was received by Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony along with the Director of Rehabilitation Services, Dr. Ariane Mangar on Friday. The equipment will be handed over to the Ptolemy Reid Rehabilitation Centre.
According to the ministry, the donation marks a major advancement in prosthetic services in Guyana, particularly in the production of prosthetic sockets, widely regarded as the most critical component of a prosthesis. The socket is the interface where the residual limb meets the mechanical hardware. When poorly fitted, it can cause pain, tissue damage, discomfort, and even lead to abandonment of the prosthetic device, the ministry stated.
With the introduction of 3D printing technology, the ministry explained that instead of using traditional plaster-casting methods, the residual limb can now be 3D scanned to create a digital model with sub millimetre accuracy. The state-of-the-art equipment allows for hyper-personalised sockets that replicate the exact geometry of the limb, ensuring a more precise and comfortable fit.
“This innovation will not only shorten production time but also improve overall patient outcomes and quality of life for persons living with limb loss,” the ministry commented.
