Fujian Association of Guyana donates $3.26M to CDC for MV Barima tragedy relief efforts
(Kaieteur News) – The Civil Defence Commission (CDC) on Friday announced that it has received a GY$3,260,000 donation from the Fujian Association of Guyana to support relief efforts for those affected by the MV Barima tragedy.
The donation was handed over at the CDC’s Thomas Lands headquarters in the presence of Counsellor Li Hanqing and Director Wang Kaojie of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Guyana, along with Lieutenant Colonel Mark Thomas, Deputy Director General of the CDC.

According to a CDC statement, the funds were raised primarily by Fujian entrepreneurs in Guyana, contributing in both their personal and corporate capacities. The commission described the gesture as a reflection of the unity and social responsibility within the Chinese community in Guyana, and as further evidence of the longstanding friendship between the peoples of China and Guyana.
During the handover ceremony, representatives from both sides discussed how the funds would be allocated and explored opportunities for continued cooperation on humanitarian assistance going forward.
Speaking on behalf of the CDC, Deputy Director General Thomas thanked the Fujian Association and the wider Chinese community for their generosity, describing the donation as a meaningful show of solidarity with the people of Guyana during a period of national grief.
The Fujian Association, in turn, extended its deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the tragedy and to all those affected. It reaffirmed its commitment to the values of unity, mutual support and social responsibility, and pledged to continue standing with the people of Guyana in times of need.
