(Kaieteur News) – Supporters and representatives of the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) took to the streets of Linden on Wednesday, in a public demonstration exercise calling for the immediate election of the chairman in Region 10.
Protestors stood in a line in the vicinity of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) with placards demanding that a chairman be sworn in.
“Who must go? …REO!’”, the crowd chanted loudly referring the Regional Executive Officer Dwight John… who they accused of deliberately stalling the reconvening of the meeting set for the chairman to be elected.

Protestors stood in a line in the vicinity of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) in Linden on Wednesday with placards and chanted in support of having a chairman sworn in.
On October 10, the Regional Democratic Council election ended in a 9-9 tie between WIN and APNU nominees. However, instead of moving to the second round of voting as stipulated by law, the REO and clerk of council, Dwight John subsequently suspended the process, referring the matter to Minister Manickchand, who later clarified she has no role in selecting the chair and hoping the process is completed.
To this, party supporters on the protest line shouted “Swear in— Goring” referring to WIN councilor, Mark Goring who was pegged for the chairmanship of the region.
“Democracy must prevail! Our vote must count!” The people shouted in a show of support for the Azruddin Mohamed led party which secured a victory in the region once controlled by the People’s National Congress (PNC). During the protest, Goring reiterated his concerns about the management of the affairs of the local democratic organ.
“It’s been almost five months since the regional elections and half of the region including the chairman and the oversight committees are not in place and so there is no monitoring of projects in the region,” Goring lamented
He noted that the REO has ignored every attempt made by councilors to try and correct the situation.
“We are calling for democracy to be respected. We would have done a resolution for the 18 councilors to sign for the meeting to appoint the chair to reconvene. It is clear that the REO is disrespecting the laws of Guyana,” he said lamenting that the absence of a chair affects the regions to put the committee responsible for monitoring and oversight of the region’s spending in place.
WIN’s leader, Azruddin Mohamed has been calling for the election of the chair in Region 10, a district traditionally dominated by the People’s National Congress Reform (PNC/R) lead APNU. For its part, APNU’s Region 10 councilors in a statement last week, expressed readiness to participate once the election is convened.
They said, “We respectfully state that we are fully prepared and willing to participate in an election once it is convened, and we hope that this is done at the earliest opportunity. We remain committed to the democratic process and to operate within the framework of the law to ensure this matter is brought to a timely and orderly conclusion.”
