(Kaieteur News) – A miner was shot during an armed robbery and bandits subsequently escaped with an all terrain vehicle (ATV) at Mara Mara Backdam on Tuesday.
Police said on Wednesday that an investigation has been launched into the alleged robbery that “occurred, between 16:30hrs and 17:00hrs at Mara Mara Backdam, Middle Mazaruni River, which was committed on a 32-year-old gold miner of Blankenburg, West Coast Demerara.”
Preliminary investigations revealed that the victim was travelling from a mining pit to his camp, accompanied by two co-workers. During the journey, they were intercepted by an armed man who emerged from the bushes nearby, he ordered them to dismount from the vehicle.
The same suspect discharged a round during the ordeal which struck a 62-year-old Brazilian gold miner in the left foot above the ankle. Two other accomplices with their faces covered and armed with what appeared to be firearms, later joined the first one and escorted the miners to their camp, which was then ransacked.
Unfortunately for the robbers, no valuables were obtained. The suspects then escaped with the ATV, fleeing in an unknown direction.
The injured worker, was transported to the Bartica Regional Hospital, where he is receiving medical attention, as efforts are ongoing to locate and apprehend the suspects and investigations continue.
