Corentyne man to stand trial for 2022 murder of farmer
(Kaieteur News) – A 12-member jury was empanelled on Tuesday at the Berbice High Court in New Amsterdam to begin proceedings against a man accused for murder, contrary to common law.
The jury was set up before Justice Gino Persaud, who will preside over the murder trial of Bhola Jaipersaud, 46.
Jaipersaud, also called ‘Joey’, of Bush Lot, Village, Corentyne, was charged for the 2022 murder of Rameshwar Sydney, called ‘White Eye’ of the same community. Sydney was killed on 8th July, 2022.

Based on reports, Jaipersaud had invited the now deceased man for a conversation on the day of the incident, at approximately 1:00pm. Sydney, a farmer, had return from his duties moments prior to the request, and was having lunch.
A short while after, reports stated that Sydney was seen stumbling out of the yard while a knife was lodged in his neck. The man collapsed and was taken to the Port Mourant Hospital, Corentyne where he succumbed to his injury while receiving medical attention.
Bhola was later arrested and charged with the murder. His first court appearance was at the Whim Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Renita Singh, where he was not required to plead. He was then remanded to prison.
On Tuesday, the accused pleaded not guilty, setting in motion the trial to determine his innocence. He will be represented by attorney Latchmie Rahamat.
Appearing on behalf of the State, prosecutor Marisa Edwards informed the court that the prosecution will present 15 witnesses, including police ranks and a pathologist.
With the jury assembled, the matter will commence on 3rd August, 2026.
Th case is the first for the June Berbice Assizes, during which over 40 cases of murder will be heard at the Berbice High Court.
