(Kaieteur News) – A 29-year-old vendor who allegedly assaulted French vlogger Antony D’Oliveira was on Friday granted $20,000 bail after being charged with the crime.
The incident, which was recorded and later uploaded on the Jumps Travel Documentary YouTube channel, reportedly occurred on January 5, 2026, at Saffon Street, La Penitence.
The accused, Quacy McKay of Kingston, Georgetown, is alleged to have assaulted D’Oliveira and used insulting language towards him.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) treated the matter as serious and arrested and charged McKay. He later appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty, who read the charges to him. McKay pleaded not guilty.
During the proceedings, McKay told the court that he had gotten out of his vehicle and noticed D’Oliveira filming him. He said he requested that the filming stop and, in trying to move the camera away, he ended up slapping the vlogger.
The prosecution opposed bail, citing public safety concerns. They highlighted that D’Oliveira, a visitor to Guyana, was allegedly slapped unprovoked on the back of his head by McKay and subjected to verbal abuse. The prosecutor also noted that both video footage of the incident and a recorded interview are available.
In response, Magistrate McGusty questioned whether the same objection would be raised if the vlogger were Guyanese, stating that “everyone stands on the same ground.” She subsequently granted McKay bail in the sum of $20,000 and placed him on a bond to keep the peace while the matter remains before the court. The case was adjourned to January 30, 2026, for further proceedings.
In a statement issued on January 6, the GPF confirmed that it is investigating the incident. The police said the video in circulation is being treated with seriousness, adding that “acts of violence against any individual are unacceptable and are contrary to the laws of Guyana and the values of safety, hospitality, and respect upheld by society.”
The GPF also expressed concern for Mr. D’Oliveira and reiterated its commitment to ensuring that Guyana remains a safe and welcoming destination for both visitors and residents.
Additionally, the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce and the Guyana Tourism Authority condemned the attack, describing it as wholly unacceptable. In a joint statement, the agencies said, “The safety and well-being of all visitors and residents remain a top priority. We reaffirm our commitment to working closely with law enforcement agencies, tourism stakeholders, and local communities to ensure that Guyana remains a destination where all feel secure and respected.”
