Kaieteur Sports – A spirited fight-back from the young Barbados team enabled them to come back from two down to clinch the 5-match series 3-2, following an electric Super Over win versus the Guyanese yesterday at the Everest Ground.
Barbados and Guyana both posted 103-10 during their respective regulation batting innings before playing to a tie which triggered the rare Super Over, which went in favor of the visitors.
Kymani Inniss led the Bajans scoring during regulation time with 37 off 40 (5×4), while in-form all-rounder Natarie Lavine chipped in with 20.
Guyana led with spin as Sahid Gajnabi (3-25), Afraz Khan (2-5) and Jaden Ganpat (2-14) had good returns, keeping the Extras to just 12. However, things would go horribly wrong for the home team, as pacer and skipper Zdari Scantlebury (3-7) picked up wickets at crucial points throughout the innings.
Daniel John (26), Gajnabi (22) and Khan (12) underestimated the target, as they failed to carry on before a string on run-outs left Guyana shook, as Kymani Inniss and wicket-keeper Oliver King shared honours for their alertness and accuracy which saw Guyana go from leading the series 2-0 to now fighting for their lives in a 1-Over duel.
Medium-pacer Kjanni Inniss lent support with 2-29 in support of his skipper’s three scalps which essentially forced the super over. Guyana taking first shot, lost their skipper Gajnabi to Lavine before making just 6 runs off their over.
The pair of Kymani Inniss (5*) and Lavine (1*) then saw their team to victory with a ball to spare, thus wrapping up one of the more exciting bilateral youth series in recent times.
At the presentation ceremony, Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) president Calvin Hope said the series was a microcosm of what’s to come in the future, citing the move as a start of a bilateral relationship between the two nations.
Hope then thanked the parents from Barbados who came to support the kids, adding that in cricket one must stay with it in order to remain successful; even during the tough times. He lauded coach Roddy Estwick, the GCB and president Bissoondyal Singh along with the local players, coaches and parents.
As part of his feature address, the GCB head highlighted that the series represents friendship, respect and competition between the two nations. Singh sent his heartfelt congratulations to both squads for teamwork and competitiveness which was exhibited throughout the series.
“Thanks to Barbados for the competitive spirit and sportsmanship both on and off the field”, said the GCB president who further hailed the BCA for its willingness to develop cricket while lauding Hope for his commitment in ensuring the grassroots cricket reaches a competitive level between the two countries.
Following the ceremony’s address, the lads were given their respective awards with the Most Runs for Guyana going to Lomar Seecharran who topped the list with 161 runs and two fifties.
Most wickets Award witnessed a tie between Guyana skipper Sahid Gajnabi and young left-arm spinner Jaden Ganpat, who both ended with a total of 5 wickets; before the economy rate of Ganpat slightly pipped that of his skipper’s to give him the edge and the crown. Gajnabi also bagged the award for the MVP for Guyana
Over in the winning camp, finals MVP award went to the skipper Scantlebury for his 3 wickets. His teammate, Lavine who copped the Most Runs award for his 170 including a best of 65, was also adjudged the tournament MVP, with Most wickets Award also going to the Bajans as Kjanni Inniss finished with a total of 7 wickets.
