(Kaieteur News) – The Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) have issued an appeal to its customers to inform the company of any increase to their electricity consumption for the holiday season.
The power company said the notification is extended to residential, commercial and industrial customers in accordance with Sections 8.1 and 42 of the Standard Terms and Conditions (STC) for Electric Services.
Section 8.1 Service Changes says that customers shall give the company reasonable prior written notice of any increase in service requirements including any increase in expected energy consumption. This is important in enabling the company to determine whether or not it can supply the revised service without changes to its facilities.
In keeping with the new regulations, specifically Section 42 of the STC, the power company will advise the customer of the time required to facilitate the increase in power consumption.
GPL explained, “This reminder follows an increase in reports of voltage fluctuations, damaged meters and burnt appliances caused by transformer and low voltage linked to unreported increases in customers’ electricity usage.”
The utility company pointed out that many customers are increasing their consumption of electricity in homes and businesses by adding air conditioning units, heavy-duty appliances, expanding business operations and converting residential homes to multiple dwelling homes/apartment buildings/commercial businesses.
GPL said that while these changes may seem routine, they can substantially affect the distribution network. Over time, transformers can become overloaded resulting in frequent outages or reduced service quality within communities.
To this end, GPL encouraged all customers to contact the nearest Commercial Office or Service Centre to inform the company of any increase in load or upcoming changes that may affect electricity usage. This should be done in conjunction with the Ministry of Public Works – Government Electrical Inspectorate (GEI).
“By notifying GPL of planned load increases, the company can assess the impact on the network and take the necessary steps to upgrade or reinforce it as needed. This should be done in conjunction with the GEI,” the power company urged to ensure that electricity is delivered safely and reliably without unnecessary interruptions.
