(Kaieteur News) – With the new vehicle tint policy set to take effect after December 31 carrying a $75,000 penalty, other traffic-related offences will soon see increased fines as well.
This was announced by Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall, SC, during his weekly Issues in the News programme. Nandlall acknowledged the public’s concern over the tint policy’s penalty but clarified that broader reforms to traffic laws are underway, particularly for offences that commonly lead to road accidents. He noted that fines for speeding, previously set at $7,500, will be increased.
“Government has already signalled that reforms are going to be made in relation to road traffic laws and regulations because the spate of accidents on our roads, the spate of fatal accidents on our roads, the great misuse and negligent use of our public roadways continue to be matters that greatly concern our government. And these are matters that we will continuously monitor very closely and make reforms when we think that it is in the public interest to do so,” the Attorney General stated.
He highlighted the role of the e-ticketing system in addressing two major offences—speeding and non-wearing of seatbelts and indicated that stricter penalties for these violations are expected to further reduce accidents. “I have no doubt that when the statistics are properly analysed, one will see a reduction in vehicular accidents and traffic accidents generally on our roadways because of the approach we have taken in relation to speeding and non-wearing of seatbelts via the e-ticketing measure. But we have other reforms that are in the pipeline,” Nandlall added.
He stated that the government is also reviewing regulations related to motor vehicle and driver’s licences, with plans to add more violations to the list of ticketable offences.
“You will now get e-tickets for a larger number of offences. And of course, harsher penalties will be imposed for speeding, among other legislative reforms,” he said.
Addressing the tint policy specifically, Nandlall reaffirmed that the standard remains 35% tint on the sides and back of vehicles, and 70% tint on the front windshield. He noted that while some members of the public disagree with the measure, the policy itself is clear.
“You may disagree with the measure, but the measure is not unclear. I want to draw a distinction between a lack of clarity and whether you oppose or support the measure,” he explained.

What will be the position with vehicles that are imported with factory installed tinted windows that doesn’t satisfy the 35% limit, as far as I’m aware these vehicles tinted windows are less than the 35% especially the rear windows.
