“Holistay” now turning into “Holi-Back-Home”

(Kaieteur News) – Dem boys hear how America come up with one new immigration rule and plenty people now scratching dem head.
Apparently, if yuh deh in America and applying for change of status — like when yuh trying to get yuh Green Card — yuh might now have to pack yuh suitcase, kiss Uncle Sam goodbye, and fly back home before dem process yuh papers. Dem boys seh is like getting put out de house before yuh mortgage approve.
Now this new rule seems to target people who deh in de United States on temporary visas and applying for permanent residence through what dem call “adjustment of status.”
Before, plenty people used to stay right deh in America while dem application processing nice and slow. But now, plenty applicants may have to leave America and complete de process at a U.S. embassy or consulate in dem home country.
And that is where de real comedy start.
Because Guyanese got one famous immigration category called “holiday.” But dem boys know that in plenty cases, “holiday” does suddenly transform into “holistay.” People go for two weeks and start talking bout “winter clothes” and “credit score” three months later.
Some ah dem went shopping and never stop shopping. Some went fuh visit auntie and end up visiting immigration lawyer. And some meet love faster than how minibus conductor does find extra passenger.
Now imagine man gone pon visitor visa, fall in love in Brooklyn, marry up, start paying rent, buy air fryer, and even learn how fuh shovel snow. Next thing immigration tell he, “Congratulations. Now please return to Guyana and continue de process from there.”
Dem boys seh some people gon suddenly remember where dem passport deh.
But de rule ain’t affecting everybody same way. People who already entered America as permanent residents through immigrant visas generally already considered lawful permanent residents, even if de physical Green Card still in de mail. In dem case, de card is more like a delivery item than an approval.
Still, dem boys seh this new policy gon create enough confusion to keep immigration lawyers in business till Kingdom Come.
Because nuff people thought dem went pon holiday. Now dem finding out de holiday gat return ticket conditions.
