Kaieteur Sports – West Indies surged to a 5-2 series win versus England yesterday, thus wrapping up a commanding U19 50-Overs tournament following a huge 59-run win at the National Cricket Stadium, Grenada.
The Caribbean lads had another strong batting charge, led by the opening pair of Earsinho Fontaine (39) and Tyriek Bryan (36) who set the tone before losing a few of their teammates.
Aaidan Racha scored a gritty 31 but it was Guyanese gloveman, Shamar Apple who provided the boost needed with his 31 off 26 (2×4 2×6).
Fellow Guyanese and one of the leading run-scorers in this series in Johnathan Van Lange (14) alongside Matthew Miller (15) and Micah McKenzie (13) helped take the West Indians to 213 all out with 4 balls remaining.
England’s wickets were divided amongst the trio of Alex French (3-21), Ralphie Albert (2-31) and Farhan Ahmed (2-37), who did well to keep the Windies right around that 200-mark.
The English youths then tried to mount a fight-back after a gritty 52 from middle-order batsman Caleb Falconer, which nearly swung the momentum after 27 from the in-form Ben Dawkins.
Windies bowling pair of spinner Racha (4-21) and seamer McKenzie (4-38), landed a number of huge blows through the innings which shook up England’s batting charge before Joe Moores (37) dug in with a grueling knock.
Only Albert (10) got out of the blocks before England’s innings essentially came to an end in the 45th over. (C. Ross)
