Kaieteur News – President Irfaan Ali on Friday outlined a series of measures he said will improve the lives of residents of Region Six, as he completed a two-day Cabinet outreach in communities within East Berbice-Corentyne region.
During a press conference, President Ali updated the media on the concerns brought forward by citizens of the region during the extensive engagements. The president noted that the government was able to assess the challenges in the context of its manifesto, and also measure the accomplishments, one such example being drainage and irrigation.
“Today, as we’ve completed the analysis so far, D&I (drainage and irrigation) is now the lowest ranked priority. And that is not to say that there’s still not a lot of work to be done, but that is to say that people are experiencing the results that we have made,” the president proclaimed.
Shifting focus, President Ali announced that there will be four new fire stations to be installed in the region to strengthen its firefighting capacity.
“You will recall that we had invested in firefighting units for every NDC and municipality, but those units now must be backed by fire hydrants and available water storage and capacity areas within every community.”
These will be implemented over the next three weeks, he added.
Plans are also ongoing for the rehabilitation of the three main municipalities, as well as community market facilities in the region. Assessments confirmed the need for proper stalls, drainage system, roofing, essential sanitation arrangements, as mandated by the president. He also stressed the importance of water availability, as well as safety features including fire safety and prevention measures. Recommendations were made for market management committees, where the best interests of both customers and vendors would be advocated for.
Rehabilitation works will also target landfill sites in the region. In this regard, the president noted that these will be catered for in the 2026 budget, together with roads and access to these sites. There will also be the provision of garbage compactor trucks for the Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) to assist with their waste disposal services.
Residents of Orealla and Siparuta have raised with the president the need for a magistrate’s court. This will be looked into, the president assured.
“They have to travel all the way to Skeldon to have their matters addressed. So, we are going to utilise technology, and with the aid of the containerised offices, establish a footprint for the people of Siparuta and Orealla to have access from one of those communities to the magistrate’s court.”
Zooming in on New Amsterdam, the president noted that government anticipates the completion of the US$161 million ‘world class’ New Amsterdam hospital and the $500 million nursing dormitory that will boost the region’s health care services.
For the home affairs aspect, President Ali promised to outfit communities with more CCTV camera in the expansion of the smart country project. Also, there will be the strengthening of the community policing groups (CPG), resuscitating the 25 dormant CPGs and introducing an additional 10, while establishing CPG desks at every police station.
The president’s visit to Region Six was the start of a series of planned regional Cabinet outreaches to directly engage citizens.
Government ministers had earlier in the day concluded community meetings where matters surrounding housing, water, land, farming, roads and contractors, markets, among others were raised.
“In this second term, we’re intensifying that connectivity with the people in the various regions and all of Guyana,” the president told reporters at the conclusion of his two-day visit to the region.
Several government Members of Parliament and advisors also accompanied the president.
