(Kaieteur News) – President Irfaan Ali on Wednesday evening warned drivers with outstanding parking tickets to pay up within 48hrs or have their license suspended. The president was speaking at a reception held at the residence of the High Commissioner of the United Kingdom to Guyana for the 5th European Mission.
The head-of-state said that so far, 42,000 tickets have been issued by the Guyana Police Force (GPF) for traffic related offences. He said that close to 10,000 persons have paid their fines electronically.
“… in another few days, you will see the top offenders published in the newspaper with their outstanding amounts in terms of tickets, and I use this forum to calmly appeal to those who have outstanding payments, to do so within the next 48 hours, or the license will be suspended,” Ali warned.
The president made it clear that the systems invested in and implemented by the government must yield benefits. Additionally, President Ali said that by the end of this year police cars will be equipped with smart meters and ranks will be provided with smart cars.
The aim, he said, is to have things done electronically, recorded and stored therefore removing the human interface and allowing technology to help people to do better, “because we have it in us to do better.”
On November 20, 2025 Kaieteur News reported that Guyana’s roads have become a danger zone, and the numbers exposed by Traffic Chief Mahendra Singh show just how out of control some motorists have become.
Singh revealed that almost half of the staggering 32,768 speeding tickets issued for the year came directly from the Road Intelligence System, which has been quietly capturing drivers tearing across the country at insane speeds—as high as 180 km/h.
“I think the only thing left for some of them is to pull the gear shift and fly the vehicle into the air,” Singh said, disgusted by the level of recklessness being recorded.
There were approximately 47,000 tickets issued for traffic related offenses this year, from January 1 to the time of his presentation.
In a shocking revelation Singh said that, “21 driver’s license would have been suspended for the period from January 1 to present day, for drivers who would have been involved in accidents, most of them caused by dangerous driving charge.”
Additionally, 1,428 persons were charged with driving under the influence, with fines ranging from $200,000 down to $5,000 and or a reprimanding discharge.
