(Kaieteur News) – President Irfaan Ali on Thursday officially swore in nine out of 10 regional chairpersons and vice-chairpersons at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre.
The event was attended by all ministers, chairpersons, and vice-chairpersons. This swearing-in ceremony followed the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) elections held on October 10, where the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) dominated, securing leadership in eight out of the ten RDC offices across the country. The only exception was Region Seven, where the newly formed We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party took control, and region 10 which ended a tie between APNU representative and WIN representative.

President Irfaan Ali and some of his cabinet members and the newly sworn-in Regional Chairmen and Vice Chairs.
Following the elections, in Region One, re-elected Regional Chairman Brentnol Ashley will be joined by newcomer Paul Pierre as Vice Chairman. Region Two has elected Devin Mohan as Regional Chairman, with Humace Oodit re-elected as Vice Chairman. In Region Three, Sheik Mohamed Inshan Ayube has been re-elected as Chairman, with Anjanie Narine elected as Vice Chairperson. In Region Four, Clemsford Belgrave and Deoraj Nauth were elected Chairperson and Vice Chairperson, respectively.
Region Five will now be led by Regional Chairman Recardo Phillips and Vice Chairman Kleon Lindey, while in Region Six, Junior Basant was elected Chairman with Sahid Khan as Vice Chairman. Region Seven will be led by Chairperson June Shurland-Gittens and Vice Chairman Alden Marslowe. Region Eight has chosen Tarcellia John as the new Regional Chairperson, with Samantha Edwards-John of the APNU as Vice Chairperson. In Region Nine, PPP/C’s Vania Albert was sworn in as Regional Chairperson, with Daniel Aguilar serving as Vice Chairman.
All the above representatives were sworn in by the president. Despite the swearing-in of these officials, the leadership for Region Ten has yet to be determined.
In his remarks, President Ali underscored the importance of the roles undertaken by the chairpersons and vice-chairpersons, urging them to carry out their duties effectively. “Before the president is clearly outlined in the local democratic organs Act, Section 75 9f that legislation stimulates that every chairman and vice chair shall take the prescribed oath before entering upon the duties of his office. This requirement underscores the fundamental principle of our governance architecture that the decentralized urbans of the state, while elected and autonomous within their spheres, remain part of the Unified Republic guided by constitutional borders,” he said.
The President added, “The rationale is clear. The old binds you, publicly and solemnly to Fidelity, impartiality, integrity and service. It is not a ritual. It is a contract, a contract between you and your constituents, between you and the state, between you and your conscience.”
