(Kaieteur News) – Road upgrades scheduled for Section ‘A’ of the East Bank Demerara (EBD) Improvement Progress– Supply to Good Success – will begin in two weeks, the Ministry of Public Works said on Wednesday during a stakeholder consultation held on Wednesday at the Friendship Secondary School.
Residents, businesses and other key groups were briefed on the technical scope of the upcoming works which will begin in two weeks and include utility relocation, extensive drainage upgrades, bridge reconstruction, and the installation of shared-use footpaths.
Kaieteur News understands that Section ‘A’ forms part of the wider East Bank Demerara Road Improvement Project, which spans Good Success to Timehri. Sections ‘B’ and ‘C’ are already underway. Section ‘C’ is nearing completion.
The Ministry of Public Works said that works will be executed in an efficient manner that will also cater to the high volume of traffic along the EBD corridor.
“This is to facilitate the high volume of traffic that traverses the East Bank corridor and will see ramped up night-time operations. This will involve the closure of one lane between 8pm and 6am to safely facilitate construction works to meet the contractual timeline(s),” the ministry explained.
Also, stakeholders were assured of the comprehensive traffic management systems, clear signage and on-site guidance which will be implemented throughout the construction period. This will be supported by the Guyana Police Force.
Subject minister Juan Edghill told residents and business operators that the works will be carried out promptly and in a safe manner.
“The development is not adhoc. So, while we solicit and encourage your patience, we want to be able to get this done as quickly as possible. Ultimately residents of the East Bank Corridor will have significant improvements in their transits and their movement for example we will have an upgraded two-lane road and, in some sections, the four lanes,” he stated.
Minister Edghill said “no sloppy work” will be accepted and that the government will not encourage the abuse of citizens while construction is being done.
Meanwhile, a major component of the project includes the demolition and reconstruction of the Khofi Canal Koker, which is a ten-month component scheduled to begin in February 2026.
While residents welcomed the planned improvements to their roadway and drainage network, they also encouraged the ministry to have strong oversight to reduce disruptions during the construction phase.
China Road & Bridge Corporation has been awarded a US$75,887,907 contract to execute the works along the East Bank roadway. The Ministry of Public Works project is being funded by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
