(Kaieteur News) – Dem boys seh the government worried ‘bout de effects of gambling in de country. But leh we tell yuh something: life in Guyana is one big gamble. Every morning when yuh put on yuh clothes and step out de house, yuh basically spinning de roulette wheel of fate.
Yuh don’t know if yuh gon reach home in time fuh dinner or end up in de hospital or worse, on Facebook wid people typing, “Gone too soon.” De roads turn into racetracks. Every corner gat a Formula One driver who believe traffic lights and pedestrian crossings is just decorative suggestions.
Dem boys seh one young lady deh in she yard, minding she own business, chatting with she sister, and next thing yuh know, bam—gunshot. Just so. In this place, yuh don’t even have to leave home fuh gamble with yuh life.
Electricity? Big gamble. One minute yuh watching TV, next minute blackout. Internet? Another gamble—especially if yuh trying fuh do something important. If rain fall, yuh whole neighbourhood turn into a water park—no need fuh a trip to Splashmin’s.
Go hospital, and that’s another bet. Yuh never sure whether yuh gon get better or come out worse. Some people does say when yuh go in, carry yuh own medication, because de doctor might tell yuh, “We fresh outta dat.”
And yet, de government busy wringing its hands over casino and betting shop. But let’s face it, Guyana itself is de biggest casino of all. Every day people betting on survival, on jobs, on justice, on electricity, and sometimes just on making it home alive.
So yes, gambling might be a scourge. But so too is life in this country. De odds stacked high, de risks plenty, and de winnings? Still pending.
Dem boys seh in dis land, yuh don’t need a slot machine to lose, just live long enough.
