(Kaieteur Sports) – Essequibo showcased their true class yesterday after thrashing Berbice by a whopping 118-runs, following contrasting half-centuries from Kevon Boodie and Quentin Sampson when action continued yesterday at the Lusignan Community Center Ground.
The Essequibians flexed their might in both departments, first racking up an imposing 288-9 from 50 overs, a much better performance from their opening match.
Experienced opener Boodie led with a classic knock of 74 off 111 balls, with 8 fours and 2 sixes as he carried his bat for the majority of the innings.
However, it was a brutal 44-ball 55 from Sampson, coupled with Keemo Paul’s 37 off 35 and Thaddeus Lovell’s cameo of 31 from 15 deliveries to finish the innings, which headlined Essequibo’s true batting capabilities.
It was a grueling all-round day for Berbice, despite their slower bowlers returning 8 wickets in total. Left-arm spinner Omesh Mathura bagged 3-51, while Kevin Sinclair (2-26), Zeynul Ramsammy (2-38) and Veerasammy Permaul (1-51) tried to contain a voracious Essequibo batting order.
Their chase then ended in the 40th over with the Essequibians being restricted to 170 all out after Tomani Caesar resisted with a crisp 57 (3×4 3×6) to help his team from plummeting further.
Only Garfield Benjamin (33) and Kevin Sinclair, who returned to hit 27 off 22 (2×4 2×6) looked threatening during the chase, after the combined left-arm spin might of Golcharran Chulai and Anthony took a huge chunk out of their batting order.
The National U19 spinner Chulai finished with 4-48 from 10 overs, while the former Harpy Eagles veteran Adams, played a great supporting cast role by finishing his spell with returns of 3-38.
Fast-bowler Ronsford Beaton (1-18), left-arm spinner Ricardo (1-11) and Myheim Khan (1-13) then picked the bones to help keep the Berbicians under 200 runs.
Batting first, Boodie showed his experience by playing a timely knock after Essequibo lost three huge wickets in Kanhaiya Ramkarran (13), Kemol Savory (4) and Ricardo Adams (19).
Ramkarran added 46 for the opening stand before becoming one of Ramsammy’s two victims, while the skipper and Adams, who was bumped slightly up the order; all fell to the class of the Berbice spinners.
Paul, as he did in the previous match, looked confident with the bat as he helped rebuild the innings following a top order collapse.
The former West Indies all-rounder eased some pressure off Boodie during their 4th wicked fifty stand, finding 2 sixes and 2 fours before having his stumps disturbed by Mathura.
Sampson pounced on the Berbice bowlers as his power-hitting provided the boost required to motor onwards after Boodie’s stability further helped his team cross the 200-run mark in the 42nd over.
His fifty required just 37 balls but it was the four big sixes and two fours which piloted a late innings tear with the Cinderella County men eyeing a possible 300-run total.
Anthony Adams played well for his 21 (1×4 1×6) but more importantly added 50 for the 6th wicket alongside Sampson before the pair fell respectively to some more spin.
While veteran pacer Clinton Pestano (1-41), was tasked with halting a marauding Lovell who almost took Essequibo to 300, falling with four fours and a pair of maximums to his credit. (Clifton Ross)
