“To anyone chasing a dream, my advice is simple: start where you are, use what you have, and trust the process. With patience, faith, and hard work, everything will fall into place in its own time.”
(Kaieteur News) – Coming from a family where creativity and skill runs deep, the apple certainly did not fall far from tree when it comes to 22-year-old Christol Fitzpatrick.
Fitzpatrick who is a baker and cook is the proud owner of ‘Cravings_gy‘, a small business which she officially launched on October 24, 2024.
Preparing to celebrate the first anniversary of her business and also her 23rd birthday on October 18, today we share with you a brief insight on the incredible journey that led to Cravings gy. A journey Fitzpatrick described that is filled with family, faith, determination, and a whole lot of flour.
When asked where it all began, the young woman said, “Growing up, I was always surrounded by relatives who could cook, bake, decorate, and cater with ease. Whenever there was a party or celebration at our home, ordering food was never an option — everything was prepared right in our kitchen.”
Those moments, she said shaped her more than she realised at the time, and as she watched how much love and effort went into creating something special for others to enjoy, and that feeling stayed with her.
She noted that out of all the things she learned from her family, baking stood out to the most. “It became my escape — my therapy. There’s something peaceful about measuring ingredients, mixing batter, and watching a creation come to life in the oven,” she mentioned.
Having a liking for it, Fitzpatrick recalled that she spent countless hours watching baking tutorials on YouTube and TikTok, teaching herself new techniques, and experimenting in the kitchen.
“At first, it was just for fun, but as time went on, I realised this was something I wanted to pursue seriously — not just as a hobby, but as a career,” she explained.
Sharpening her skills even further, Fitzpatrick related that she decided to enroll at the Carnegie School of Home Economics, where she gained professional training in the art of baking and culinary preparation. That experience she noted, gave her the confidence to take the next big step — turning her passion into a thriving business.
Taking the next big step, the young woman recalled, “When I first started Cravings_gy, I focused on cookies. I was inspired by the popular Crumbl Cookies brand that had taken social media by storm and wanted to bring something similar to Guyana. My goal was simple: to create desserts that not only looked amazing but tasted even better.”
From cookies, she then expanded by offering a range of baked goods which include cakes, cupcakes, pastries just to name a few.
With her business about to turn one, Fitzpatrick disclosed that one of the things she is most grateful for is her support system. She expressed that her family, friends, and partner have been by her side through every step of this journey. “My family is always eager to taste test new recipes, and their honest feedback helps me to improve. My partner, especially, has been my rock — always reminding me not to compare my progress to others and to use every challenge as motivation,” she stated.
She added that their encouragement means everything, especially during times when things get tough.
Speaking of tough times, she is of the firm conviction that running a small business is rewarding, but it is also challenging. Noting that there are good days and slow days, she explained that sometimes sales fluctuate, and those moments can be discouraging.
Taking it all in, the young entrepreneur noted however, that she has learned that patience, consistency, and faith are key to overcoming the difficult times. “I’ve come to understand that success doesn’t happen overnight — it’s built one step, one recipe, and one satisfied customer at a time,” she told this magazine.
Proud of what her business has been able to achieve, she shared that becoming an entrepreneur has taught her so much about independence, discipline, and resilience. “I’ve also had the opportunity to participate in two business expos (Women in business expo and Fairre of the Ages) this year, which gave me great exposure and allowed me to connect with customers face-to-face,” she mentioned.
Grateful for the experience, she disclosed that the feedback she received from those events has been heartwarming, reminding her why she started in the first place.
Still young and new in the business arena, Fitzpatrick said that the long-term goal for Cravings_gy has always remained the same that is to stand out from the crowd. According to the young woman, she wants her brand to be known for its quality, creativity, and affordability. “I don’t just want people to recognise Cravings_gy as a name; I want them to associate it with great service, delicious products, and genuine passion. Every item that leaves my kitchen is made with the same love and attention to detail as the first batch I ever bake,” she pointed out.
“Even though I’m still at the early stages of my business journey, I’m proud of how far I’ve come. There are moments when I feel uncertain, but I always remind myself why I started — because baking brings me joy, and through Cravings_gy, I get to share that joy with others. My story is still being written, but one thing I know for sure is that I’ll continue to put my heart into everything I do,” she expressed.
That being said, this young entrepreneur strongly believes that more expos and opportunities for small businesses in Guyana can help young entrepreneurs gain recognition and grow.
Speaking directly to aspiring entrepreneurs, she expressed, “So, to anyone chasing a dream, my advice is simple: start where you are, use what you have, and trust the process. With patience, faith, and hard work, everything will fall into place in its own time.”
