All eyes on region Four!: Amanza’s party holds decisive vote in today’s Region four RDC elections

(Kaieteur News) – As the elections for Chairpersons and Vice Chairpersons of all ten Regional Democratic Councils (RDCs) take place today, all eyes are on Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica), where tensions are high and political power hangs in the balance.

The decisive vote could come down to the one being held by Forward Guyana Movement (FGM) representatives Tiffini Stoll. Region Four, the most populous in Guyana and a key electoral battleground, has traditionally been dominated by A Partnership for National Unity (APNU). However, this year’s disappointing performance by the APNU has shifted the balance of power. The People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) secured 87,028 votes, followed by APNU with 46,770, and the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party, led by businessman Azruddin Mohamed, with 41,936 votes.

At the conclusion of the 2025 General and Regional Elections, PPP/C emerged with 17 seats, just short of an outright majority. APNU captured 9 seats, while WIN secured 8. With FGM’s single seat, Amanza Walton-Desir’s party, now holds the deciding vote that will determine whether PPP/C or the combined opposition take control of the Region Four RDC. The opposition parties, if united, would hold one seat more than the PPP/C. The faith of the governance between the council lies between FGM representatives of the region Tiffini Stoll.

The PPP/C has the following representatives on the Region Four RDC: Shurna Amos, Jude Andrews, Jasodra Appalsamy, Neemwattie Baldeo, Arlington Belgrave, Winston Cumberbatch, Rehad Drepaul, Saleesha Gafoor, Devi Jagroop, Eresha Melville, Edray Morian, Deoraj Nauth, Alana Persaud, Roopnarain Persaud, Sumatie Ramcharan, Raghunandan Singh, and David Williams.

Representatives of APNU include: Terence Adams, Ravoldo Romario Birbal, Marcia Amanda Chattoor-Gordon, Jasmain Cassey Hackett, Shaneika Odessa Haynes, Dillon Andrew Mohamed, Robin Nadata Althea Simon, Shirley Hermina Witter, Sheik Mohamed Muazziz Yaseen, and Tulsie Rabindra Singh.

WIN is represented by: Corwin Alexander Austin, Jennel Natoya Frank-Leitch, Akeem Terrence Fraser, Latoya Kenenisha Joseph, Savion Lloyd Paddy, Shadirra Jane Pugsley, Roshana Adassa Rose, and Felica Alicia Sheriff-Forrester.

FGM leader Amanza Walton Desir, when contacted for a comment on collaboration, Walton-Desir refused to comment at the time. Beyond Region Four, the Official Gazette revealed that Regions Eight and Ten are also facing closely contested outcomes, forcing parties to negotiate alliances. In Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni), both the PPP/C and WIN won seven seats each, while APNU gained just one. The final decision on regional leadership there will depend on which side APNU chooses to align with. Meanwhile, in Region Ten (Upper Demerara-Berbice), long considered an APNU stronghold, the WIN party made significant inroads, capturing nine seats with 10,262 votes. APNU followed with five seats (5,370 votes), PPP/C with three (4,197 votes), and FGM with one (818 votes). Though WIN is poised to lead, it will also need the support of one of the other parties to secure formal leadership.
