Hetymyer, Shepherd outline discipline during Berbice High School visit

(Kaieteur Sports) – A handful of the most popular names in West Indies cricket graced the auditorium of the Berbice High School (BHS) in New Amsterdam on Friday, as the school recognition of the importance of sports.
The studded bracket included Guyana Amazon Warriors’ Shimron Hetmyer and Romario Shepherd, along with senior West Indies female player and former West Indies Under-19 Captain, Ashmini Munisar.
The international cricketers rendered stirring speeches detailing their struggles and achievements along their rise to fame, as they sought to resonate with their eager audience of school children, most of whom are sports enthusiasts.
Back in July, President Irfaan Ali mandated that all public schools countrywide should dedicate every Friday for sports and physical activities. In this regard, the school sought out the Guyanese stars, including Kevin Sinclair to help students understand the significance of sports.
Addressing students and staff, the Guyanese athletes, all of whom are Berbicians, underscored the importance of maintaining discipline. Shepherd affirmed that professional cricket models his life, as it requires much discipline. Being much more than just a game, the star batsman told his audience that it enabled him to ascend to a level where his passion is fulfilled, while also being able to make a satisfactory livelihood.
Munisar said one needs to be respectful to rules, peers and elders, regardless of the type of sport, or one’s station in life. The cricketer also hailed the advancements made for the female division of West Indies cricket, and encouraged girls present to pursue their dreams of becoming national and international cricketers.
“If girls your age start playing now, and if you can get better by the time, you meet my age, then that’s a big plus for Guyana and West Indies on a whole, because when you reach to that level, you’re so well developed,” the senior West Indian player encouraged, while also cautioning that students should strike a balance between education and sports.
Hetmyer, an alumnus of BHS, noted that “Growing up, discipline has played a big part in my life when it comes to going training and making sure that I do the right thing, especially when I’m battling…..in everything you do be disciplined. In your home life, in your school life, after school, going to work – getting to work on time.”
Following the formal sessions, the trio engaged scores of students and teachers of the institution for photo opportunities and autographs.
