Region Three Education Department Ramps Up Golf as Part of PE Initiative
Teachers and students of the Westminster Secondary School made a bit of history with being the first school in Region Three to introduce golf as part of its PE initiative.
Kaieteur Sports – Westminster Secondary School has become the first school in Region Three to introduce golf as part of its Physical Education (PE) initiative, thanks to the collaboration of the Guyana Golf Association (GGA) and the Westside Golf Course.
President of the GGA, Aleem Hussain, engaged several Grade 10 classes with hands-on demonstrations, introducing students to the fundamentals of golf and highlighting the opportunities the sport provides—including scholarships, career advancement, and valuable networking.
Region Three’s Regional Education Officer (REDO), Mr. Chintu, has embraced this new emphasis on golf and announced plans to feature the sport in an upcoming Headteachers’ session, ensuring that all schools in the region are introduced to the game. “Leguan Secondary has twice been crowned National Champions and finished second in 2025. With a facility right here in Vreed-en-Hoop, we are in an excellent position to give our learners access to a sport that builds character and opens doors.”
The Westside Golf Course, designed and built by Aleem Hussain, has been featured in the prestigious Golf Architecture Magazine as a model for future golf course development. Its compact design allows it to fit seamlessly into the heart of the community while still providing a challenging layout for both beginners and seasoned players.
Conveniently located just four minutes from the Demerara Harbour Bridge on the new Schoonard Highway, the course is open to the public and also serves as a vibrant community hub.
In addition to golf, it hosts cultural events such as Phagwah and Easter celebrations, as well as family gatherings.
