Kaieteur News – The Ministry of Home Affairs is preparing to spend approximately $130 million more to complete several outstanding works on the new Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) headquarters on Homestretch Avenue, Georgetown.
This was revealed at the recent opening of bids at the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB) office. According to the information provided, the ministry had issued a tender, seeking bids for the installation of an elevator and completion of building and infrastructure works at CANU Headquarters.
Three contractors have applied for the contract which is estimated to cost $130,368,917.
Kaieteur News reported that in 2024, the ministry awarded a $421 million contract to construct the new headquarters which is next to the new Guyana Fire Service (GFS) headquarters on Homestretch Avenue.
At the sod turning event in January 2024, President Irfaan Ali said that the government is looking to construct a new headquarters for CANU that will consist of a regional integrated system. He explained that this will allow CANU not only to function effectively out of the city but to function in every single region with the same efficiency, same capability and with the same ability to proactively work against those who try to destroy the society with drugs.
“An important part what we are doing with CANU also is to build its capacity to integrate with other regional structure in the Caribbean, in Latin America and of course with our partners in the western hemisphere that is why the structure of CANU will reflect this new approach to the work that they do,” he added.
In addition to the $421 million, it was stated during an inspection exercise in June 2024 that contractor Green Plains Enterprise was awarded a $149.6 million contract to construct a culvert, fence, and security hut and storage unit for the CANU building.
Notably, in April this year, another project for construction of barracks at the building was opened at NPTAB. The ministry had provided an estimate of $122 million for that project.
