Kaieteur News – The People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPPC) has won a second consecutive term. We at the Kaieteur News family extend congratulations to President Mohamed Irfaan Ali and his team as they work to lead this nation forward for the next five years. What a nation it is! and what expectations there are for the next five year.
Lots of promises have been made on the campaign trail, and in their bid to out-promise their competitors, much was laid before citizens. Each one of those promises made by the PPPC, from the returning president to the prime minister to the vice president must be kept. The promises of the past months must be kept in full, which would signal a start that is refreshing, as well as one that’s inspiring. We at this paper hope that the new government will see to that, without any hedging, any walking back.
The past five years have indicated that there is so much more to do, so much that leave a lot to be desired. A wise government, an astute leader, should have a notebook that is packed with things to be started from scratch, areas in which there is room for improvement. A national leader that is still wiser would be open to ideas that he and his team didn’t think of, and finds ways to incorporate those ideas, of only a few, into his vision. This is our message to President Ali on his electoral victory.
To win in the manner that his party did should inform the president of where the gaps are. To touch the bruises that came out of what was a blistering campaign would remind the president that there are those who were not too happy with his performance in his first term. There were some achievements that speak for themselves, and we will not be hesitant in recognizing those. It is what professional reporting is all about, and we at this paper will continue to do so, through the disagreements that have strewn the path and relationship in the last five years. In this regard, there is an urgent need for the government, for senior leaders, to set an example of how communications should be, how disagreements ought to be handled, and the standards that must be constant, because from those there will be no departure. When there is a spiritual commitment to matters of these types then the population is inspired to trust, to effort.
What we are laying in the public space is that there have been sharp disagreements of the past must give way to a cooler tone, a more receptive frame of mind to whatever issue divide. The biggest issue is oil, and it is what has made Guyana a name on the global stage. Oil, due to its contributions to Guyana’s economy cannot be pushed into the state of being a secondary issue, one that is given less than the highest attention, on a continuing basis. Because it means so much to this country, Guyanese must learn to live and dream, breathe and be inspired, by oil. From President Ali to his cabinet to his supporters and to every citizen of Guyana, oil has to feature heavily in the conversations, in the expectations, and in the inspirations. On any occasion that this precious wealth, this sacred wealth, is treated at a lesser degree of importance, then nothing has been learned.
Guyana is where it is, and all those campaign promises made by the victorious PPPC are due to the presence of oil. President Ali is now experienced enough to appreciate that Guyanese, from his government to this publication, are still in the beginner’s stage of knowing what this demanding new subject called oil means. In other words, there is still a huge learning curve, after the first discovery of what is a sacred national endowment. We encourage the president to view every citizen, every voice, including that of this paper, as a fellow classmate in this journey to learn as much as is possible, so that the best is extracted for all Guyanese. Congratulations to the PPPC, and may the next five year be characterized by progressive leadership and governance.
