Kaieteur News – While commending the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) for a smooth management the General and Regional Election, Private Sector Commission (PSC) has supported the ongoing recount of ballots for Regions 4 and 5.
During a post-election press conference on Thursday, Chairman of the PSC Captain Gerald Gouveia jnr., commended GECOM for the efficiency, accuracy, and transparency with which the process was managed. “The timely posting of results and information online for the public to view in real time has set a strong standard for openness and accountability. “Across the 2,790 polling stations, there was observable dedication, professionalism, patience, and understanding by GECOM staff and we commend the competence and dedication demonstrated by them.”
Speaking on the recount, the PSC Chair noted that while some may not welcome the idea of a recount, it remains part of the democratic process. “We commend the readiness and professionalism of GECOM and the police in facilitating it.”
Added to this, Captain Gouveia said that all Guyanese should be commended for what has been one of the most efficient and peaceful elections the nation has ever experienced.
He noted that as one of the accredited local observer missions, the PSC fielded approximately 150 observers. According to the PSC chair, the mission maintained a significant presence in Regions 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, and 10, where the teams were able to witness the voting process, the counting of Statements of Poll, and the tabulation.
He noted that “Throughout the entire elections period, both international and local observer missions consistently reported that the process went smoothly and without major incident. Observers also witnessed that the majority of polling stations had representatives from the PPP, APNU, and WIN.”
“The professionalism and diligence shown by these party agents, while representing their respective interests, was phenomenal and contributed to the smooth conduct of voting and counting.”
Captain Gouveia noted while there have been claims raised by political parties and commentators online, all of these have been addressed appropriately by GECOM. As such, the Chairman said that from all the observations made across the country and from the observations now made at the recount, the PSC is satisfied that the declaration of results from GECOM is beyond challenge.
“We are fully confident in GECOM’s execution of both the electoral process and the recount, and we commend them for conducting it in a free, fair, transparent, and efficient manner,” he said. However, the commission said it observe some areas for improvement. These include ensuring better access and accommodations for persons with disabilities; providing improved signage from the street to the polling booth particularly in large stations where confusion was observed control, given the long hours required for the process.
