Kaieteur News – Police have released an official statement on the tragic death of former National Cyclist, Alanzo Greaves on Wednesday night.
Greaves, 36, was killed in a bike accident along Mandela Avenue, behind the Botanical Gardens. Police in a press release said he lost his life around 23:30hrs after the wheel of his Ducati motorcycle came into contact with “a heap of mud that was on the extreme eastern edge of the road beyond the continuous white line”.
According to investigators, Greaves was reportedly riding at a “fast rate” and lost control of the bike. He was reportedly not wearing a helmet too and sustained severe head injuries.
Greaves was pronounced dead on the scene by a doctor of the Emergency Response Team (EMT) on board an ambulance. Information reaching Kaieteur News is that he was socialising with friends just mere moments before the crash. When he left the location, they did not know that it would have been the last time seeing him alive. Six years ago, Greaves’ cycling career ended following a motorcycle crash which severely damaged his left knee. Despite the setback, Greaves had plans of returning to cycling and representing his country again. In his 15-year career, Greaves recorded more than 100 race wins locally and internationally.
