PSC expresses confidence in GECOM to conduct free and fair elections
Kaieteur News – The Private Sector Commission (PSC) on Saturday expressed confidence in the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) to host free and fair elections.
In a statement to the media, the PSC said that as an accredited observer, “We reiterate our confidence in the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) and its ability to conduct these elections in a free, fair, and transparent manner. Having engaged directly with GECOM and reviewed their operational readiness, we are satisfied that the necessary systems are in place to deliver a credible process worthy of the Guyanese people.”
The PSC said that it has met with all international and diplomatic observer missions, and intends to work in close collaboration with them throughout the electoral process.
“We commend the invaluable contributions of the embedded International Missions that have been working alongside GECOM over recent months to strengthen its technical capacity and institutional preparedness. The PSC is pleased to work closely with the international diplomatic community, in particular the ABCEU partners (United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and the European Union) and we extend our appreciation for their continued support of democracy, peace, and stability in Guyana,” the statement said.
Further, the statement said that the body met with representatives of the Joint Services and National Security Agencies. “The PSC commends and recognizes their preparedness, their collaborative approach, and the mitigation strategies they have in place. We fully support their zero-tolerance position on violence, intimidation, and any attempt at unrest. We echo their message that any such actions will be effectively confronted under any circumstance.”
The PSC Observer Mission underlines the importance of a free, fair, and equitable electoral process. All parties must have fair and equal access, particularly free from obstruction and from intimidation.
Meanwhile, the private sector body called on political leaders to demonstrate the highest level of integrity, accountability, and leadership during this time; hold themselves accountable for the actions of their supporters.
“We reject any suggestion that leaders cannot control their base. If you wish to lead the nation, you must first lead by example,” the statement said.
The PSC called on leaders to refrain from incendiary language or calls to violence.
“We condemn, in the strongest possible terms, recent remarks promoting that party supporters should resort to violence. Such rhetoric has no place in our democracy. Leaders who incite unrest or deny responsibility for their supporters must be held accountable.”
Additionally, the PSC called for a “peaceful election” noting that “Guyana’s future rests on our collective commitment to democracy, the rule of law, and the peaceful expression of political will.”
“The Private Sector Commission, together with our partners, will continue to monitor, report, and support the process in order that the election results reflect the will of the Guyanese people. We urge every citizen to participate with dignity, calm, and respect.
On September 1, let us show the world that Guyana’s democracy is resilient, that our people are united in peace, and that our leaders are worthy of the trust placed in them to govern the continued development and progress of Guyana.”
