Kaieteur Sports – A week of top notch inter ward football competition came to an end recently when the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) staged an Inter Ward five a side, small goal $5M football competition concluded.
The event, which saw some 35 teams participating, was staged in observance of the Political Movement’s 14th anniversary. The knockout tournament was called the, “APNU Inter-Ward 5 A-Side Football Tournament” and held at the People national Congress Reform (PNCR) Sophia Headquarters Compound.
Over $5M in cash and other incentives were up for grabs and with all the top inter ward football teams participating a keenly competitive and exciting tournament was held.
In the end it was the Mocha Number One team that came out victorious with 3-1 victory over North East La Penitence.
Other results show from the quarterfinal stage Wortmanville defeating -Albouystown 1-0. East Ruimveldt winning from Mocha Number Two by a 2 – 1 margin. North East La Penitence squeezing past South Ruimveldt 1-0. Mocha 1 getting past Timehri 2 – 1.
In the semifinal encounters- Mocha No 1 outscored Wortmanville 4 – 3 in a Ding Dong battle, while North East La Penitence won from East Ruimveldt 2 – 1 in another closely fought game.
In the third-place play off, Wortmanville defeated East Ruimveldt 2-0 to claim that prize.
Hefty prizes were at stake with the winning team Mocha walking away with over $2M. Runner up North East La Penitence got $1M. Third placed Wortmanville received $750,000 while fourth placed East Ruimveldt carried home $500,000. The APNU organizers made sure that all the teams that participated received prize monies.
Teams losing at the quarterfinal stage got $25,000. Round of 16 winners got $35,000 while losers collected $20,000. Those winning first round matches received $30,000 while those bowing out in the first round got $15,000.
Apart from the numerous well known Georgetown teams. Other teams were drawn from Berbice, Linden, Bartica, West Demerara, East Coast Demerara and East Bank Demerara.
The APNU movement would like to thank all the teams that participated and their followers. They would like to congratulate the winners and encourage and wish the others to keep on training and better luck next time.
