Kaieteur News – Five persons were injured on Friday night when three vehicles transporting ballot boxes to the Guyana Elections Commission’s (GECOM) headquarters collided, after an unknown vehicle drove into the path of a police escort along the East Coast Demerara Public Road, in the vicinity of La Bonne Intention (LBI).
The injured have been identified as 39-year-old Nattel Stanley, an APNU polling agent from Lancaster Village, 28-year-old Evris Harte, a Deputy Supervisory Returning Officer from Corriverton, Police Corporal Anvinash Bhiro (#23966) stationed at Whim Police Station, 37-year-old Andrea Cort, a WIN party polling agent from Rose Hall Town, and 38-year-old GECOM agent Anascica Hinds from Glasgow Park, Berbice.
Police in a statement said the convoy consisted of three minibuses (#BAB 6899, #BAL 2180 and #PXX 7899) carrying ballot boxes from the Central Police Station and Whim Police Station in Region 6, Berbice.
Police reported that minibus #BAB 6899 was heading west along the LBI Public Road, East Coast Demerara, carrying ballot box #DF048 under police escort. Following closely behind was minibus #PXX 7898 with ballot box #DF047. Both vehicles originated from the Central Police Station. Trailing them was minibus #BAL 2180, that was transporting ballot box #DF050 from the Whim Police Station.
“All of the vehicles were being escorted by Force Motorcar #PAB 8212, when an unknown motorcar drove north-west out of LBI Access Road into the pathway of the escort, causing the Police vehicle to apply brakes. In doing so, Minibus #BAB 6899 applied brakes, which led to Minibus #PXX 7898 colliding with the rear of Minibus #BAB6899, and then Minibus #BAL 2180 collided with the rear of Minibus #PXX 7899,” police said.
As a result of the collision, the five persons sustained injuries and were immediately transported by police to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) for treatment.
Meanwhile, the ballot boxes were transported safely and securely to GECOM’s headquarters, Public Relations Officer Yolanda Ward told Kaieteur News.
“All the election materials were intact. They have already been delivered to GECOM headquarters. They are in secure custody,” she stated.
An investigation has been launched into the accident.
