Kaieteur Sports – Guyana’s Junior Lady Jaguars have booked their spot in the semifinal stage of the 2025 Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Girls’ Under-14 Challenge Series after grinding out a 0-0 draw against the Cayman Islands on Tuesday at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, Trinidad.
Heading into the match, Guyana only needed to avoid defeat to secure qualification, and they did just that, keeping the Caymanians at bay throughout the contest to claim the crucial point.
The game kicked off with both sides feeling each other out, but Cayman pressed early, forcing Guyana to absorb some pressure in the opening half. The Jaguars created their best chance in the 35th minute when Kellyann Ellis latched onto a loose ball inside the box. She managed to get a touch goal-ward, but before she could capitalize, a recovering Cayman defender snuffed out the danger. The first half ended scoreless.
The search for a breakthrough continued after the restart. Guyana, already on nine points, only needed a draw to finish atop Group ‘C’ in Tier II, while Cayman pushed for a winner. The Jaguars had a scare in the 42nd minute when substitute goalkeeper Lillianna Bacchus pulled off a brilliant save on the line to deny what looked like a certain goal, keeping the clean sheet intact.
Despite tired legs, Guyana still threatened. Lehianna Bengamin tried her luck from distance with a long-range strike that had Cayman’s goalkeeper Anderson scrambling, the ball whistling just wide of the post.
The Jaguars broke through again in the 66th minute with a neat build-up, but Anderson produced another strong save to preserve the stalemate. From there, Guyana shifted into a compact defensive shape, shutting down spaces and seeing out the result.
At the final whistle, the Lady Jaguars had done enough, finishing atop of Group ‘C’ on 10 points, edging Anguilla, and advancing confidently into the semifinals.
