Slingerz, GDF set for another Elite League title tussle

…Army takes one-goal lead after two weekends of action

(Kaieteur News) – The early standings of the 2026 Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Elite League are already hinting at a familiar rivalry, with defending champions Slingerz FC and the club they dethroned last season, Guyana Defence Force (GDF) FC, setting the pace after two rounds of action.

Both title contenders have opened the campaign with perfect records, collecting six points from two matches. But it is GDF who currently occupy top spot, courtesy of a superior goal difference.

The Army side have scored six goals without conceding, giving them a +6 goal difference, while Slingerz have also kept two clean sheets but have scored five goals for a +5 differential.

It is an early advantage for GDF, but one that could prove significant in what is already shaping up to be an intriguing battle for the Elite League crown.

GDF began their campaign in emphatic fashion, hammering Monedderlust FC 5-0 before grinding out a 1-0 victory over Western Tigers FC.

Slingerz, meanwhile, have been equally resolute defensively. The defending champions edged Guyana Police Force FC 1-0 in their opening fixture before making a statement against Elite

League newcomers Camptown FC, cruising to a 4-0 victory.

The results have left the two heavyweight clubs as the only teams yet to drop points, with the early table providing an immediate reminder of the rivalry that could define the championship race.

GDF, of course, will be eager to reclaim the title surrendered to Slingerz, who completed an unbeaten championship-winning campaign last season. Slingerz, on the other hand, have wasted little time in signalling their intent to retain the crown.

While it is far too early to call it a two-team race, the opening standings have certainly set the stage for one.

Behind the leading pair, Santos FC sit third on three points from one match after defeating Ann’s Grove United 2-1.

Den Amstel FC occupy fourth with three points from two matches, having recorded one victory and one defeat, while Guyana Police Force FC are fifth, also on three points. The Lawmen rebounded from their 1-0 loss to Slingerz by defeating Fruta Conquerors 2-1.

Monedderlust are sixth on three points after recovering from their heavy loss to GDF with a 2-1 victory over Den Amstel. Their -4-goal difference, however, keeps them below the teams above them.

Western Tigers are seventh without a point from their lone match, following their narrow 1-0 defeat to GDF. Ann’s Grove is eighth, also without a point after their 2-1 loss to Santos.

Fruta Conquerors sit ninth after losing both matches, while newly promoted Camptown occupy the bottom position following their 4-0 defeat to Slingerz.

There is still a long road ahead, with the Elite League campaign stretching deep into next year and plenty of opportunities for the chasing pack to close the gap.

But if the opening two rounds are anything to go by, the battle at the top could once again come down to Slingerz and GDF.
