…GDF, Police and Monedderlust march to three points

(Kaieteur News) – Defending champions Slingerz Football Club and former champions Guyana Defence Force (GDF) FC maintained their unbeaten starts to the 2026 Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Elite League season following another weekend of competitive action at the GFF’s National Training Centre, Providence.

Slingerz continued their impressive title defence with a commanding 4-0 victory over Elite League newcomers Camptown FC in Sunday’s opening fixture, while GDF FC followed with a narrow 1-0 win over Western Tigers in the second encounter.

The weekend also produced first victories for Guyana Police Force FC and Monedderlust FC, adding further movement to the early league standings.

For Camptown, Sunday represented an Elite League baptism, with the newly promoted side entering the contest against Slingerz FC with ambition and belief, despite facing the reigning champions in their first-ever top-flight fixture.

Coach Calvin Allen had made it clear before kick-off that his team was not merely entering the Elite League to make up the numbers. Allen revealed that Camptown had set an ambitious target of leaving the contest with three points, but Slingerz’ quality and experience ultimately proved decisive.

Camptown adopted a disciplined, defensive approach from the opening whistle, sitting deep and attempting to frustrate a Slingerz side that dominated possession and territory throughout the opening half.

The champions repeatedly threatened, with last season’s MVP Darron Niles, Kelsey Benjamin, Neron Barrow and Jamaican forward Kemar Beckford all coming close as Slingerz applied sustained pressure.

Camptown’s defensive structure, however, held firm for much of the half before Slingerz captain Curtez Kellman finally broke the deadlock in the 38th minute.

Kellman rose above the defence to power a towering header into the net from a corner, giving Slingerz a deserved advantage heading into the interval.

Camptown remained compact after the restart, continuing to make life difficult for the champions. Slingerz, though, gradually changed the tempo of the contest with a series of second-half substitutions, injecting greater pace and attacking movement into their play.

That adjustment paid dividends when forward Yusifu Kargbo, who hails from Sierra Leone, doubled the advantage, finishing from close range for his first Elite League goal.

Kargbo almost added a second moments later, but his effort struck the side post as Camptown were left under increasing pressure.

The match was effectively put beyond Camptown’s reach late in the contest when 19-year-old Bryan Wharton produced a decisive cameo off the bench, scoring in the 83rd minute, before striking again just three minutes later to complete a quickfire double and stretch Slingerz’ advantage to 4-0.

The teenager came agonisingly close to completing a hat-trick, but his right-footed volley crashed against the post.

The result marked Slingerz’ second victory from two matches, leaving the champions unbeaten and firmly positioned at the top of the early standings as they pursue another league crown.

For Camptown, meanwhile, the defeat provided a valuable introduction to the intensity and quality required at Elite League level.

GDF 1 – 0 Western Tigers

GDF FC also maintained their perfect start, but had to work considerably harder for their three points against Western Tigers.

The two sides battled in a closely contested encounter, with neither able to establish a decisive advantage for much of the match. Just when the game appeared destined to remain deadlocked, GDF were awarded a penalty in the 90th minute.

Colin Nelson accepted the responsibility and converted from the spot to give the former champions a dramatic 1-0 victory.

The win moved GDF to two victories from two matches, while Western Tigers were left searching for their first point of the campaign.

POLICE FC 2 – 1 FRUTA CONQUERORS

Meanwhile, Guyana Police Force FC bounced back from their opening-night defeat to Slingerz with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Fruta Conquerors.

Fruta, who had opened their campaign with a 2-1 defeat to Den Amstel, appeared determined to respond positively and took an early lead against the Law Men.

Police, however, refused to surrender and produced a strong second-half response, with Nicholas McArthur scoring twice in the 78th and 88th minutes to complete the comeback and give GPF their first three points.

MONEDDERLUST FC 2 – 1 DEN AMSTEL

Monedderlust FC also recorded their first victory, recovering from their heavy 5-0 defeat to GDF on opening night to beat Den Amstel 2-1.

The Elite League resumes this weekend, with Fruta Conquerors facing Ann’s Grove United SC in Saturday’s opening match from 6:30 pm, while Camptown and Western Tigers will both be seeking their first points of the season.

Sunday’s action sees GDF FC tackle Den Amstel from 6:30 pm, before Slingerz FC return to the field against Santos FC, with the defending champions aiming to preserve their unbeaten record and maintain their early position in the Elite League.
