Leader of the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party, Azruddin Mohamed speaking at his party’s rally in Moruca, Region One on Saturday.
Kaieteur News – Presidential hopeful and Leader of the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party, Azruddin Mohamed on Saturday promised the residents of Moruca, Region One to build a state-of-the-art sports ground and an Olympic sized swimming poll for athletes, once elected to office.
Mohamed was speaking at his party’s first rally in Moruca which was held at the Kumaka Recreational Ground.
Speaking to a large group of supporters, the presidential candidate boasted that his party intends to transform Guyana thereby ensuring that all citizens live comfortably.
“Our people are left behind, it is so sad to see how people are living in this country in every region, in every village our people are left behind. Persons are living in shacks, under plastic, under tarpaulin in this burgeoning economy. They (government) boast about fastest growing GDP, so much barrels of oil and yet our people suffer,” he expressed.
Noting that his party will not fail the people, he told residents that WIN has a lot of plans and policies that will benefit and empower them.
“Look at the condition of this ground [Kumaka Recreational Ground], we will ensure that Moruca gets a state-of-the-art ground for our athletes with floodlights too.”
He said a resident told him Moruca has many swimmers and the area where persons go to swim, when the water gets low, it poses a difficulty for swimmers.
“I will ensure that I build a swimming pool here in Moruca, and we will name this state-of-the-art Olympic size pool after the late Ravel La Rose (a former national swimmer),” Mohamed announced.
Highlighting some of his plans for the Moruca area, Mohamed said his party will ensure that the road from Kumaka to Kwebanna will be fixed along with the road from Kumaka to Kamwatta. “We will ensure that we will fix these roads and we will ensure that the people in here they get preference to do the contracts to fix these roads, the people must benefit from in here, the people first and foremost must benefit,” he said.
He disclosed that WIN also intends to address the electricity problem in Moruca, noting that after 59 years, the country still has electricity issues. “We will ensure that if we gotta set up solar farms, whatever we have to do, I will ensure that by 2030, we must get everyone in here sustainable electricity,” he promised.
Improving access to potable water, housing and quality education are also high on WIN’s agenda. Mohamed promised to provide transportation for every child, and form a committee to build free homes for the vulnerable.
On the subject of healthcare delivery, the party leader said he is aware of shortages of medication, and staff at healthcare facilities. In addition, he said, healthcare professionals are not being paid well. He noted that WIN plans to increase all public servant salaries by 50%, and that they would engage the private sector to raise salaries of those working in the private sector.
Mohamed pointed to one set of contractors benefitting from large government contracts.
“We got to ensure we put a full stop to these things, one person must not get all these things, everyone must get a slice of the cake and yet they got to dump hundreds of millions of dollars of expired drugs, we dumping so much,” he elaborated.
Mohamed said WIN intends to stop wasteful spending and plans to invest in the people and increase their salaries “so you can live a better life.”
Already noted in his party’s manifesto, the Presidential candidate told Moruca residents that WIN will increase the LCDs funds to 25% for the Indigenous people, and revise the Amerindian Act, so they can get a say in the country’s development.
Further, a credit union will be set up and Indigenous people like farmers, entrepreneurs, single mothers, and loggers among others would be able to borrow money “at zero percent interest rate.”
“It is all about empowering the people, lifting the people up,” the billionaire businessman said at his rally.
Mohamed had mentioned also that if elected to government, WIN intends to make September 10, a national holiday in recognition of Stephen Campbell, who was the first Amerindian parliamentarian.
WIN’s candidates Dawn Hastings-Williams, Natasha Singh-Lewis and other national and regional candidates joined Mohamed as he expounded on his plans for the community and country.
