Kaieteur News – In an emphatic fashion, President Irfaan Ali on Monday evening admonished a sizeable gathering in New Amsterdam to keep in mind the government that backed the town with policies and programmes for its general development, and be gracious to demonstrate this recognition by returning the PPP/C to government on September 1.
The president was speaking at an election campaign rally held at Freedom House in New Amsterdam. There, he pinned the improvements made to the lives of residents on the robust investments relentlessly undertaken by his government.
“We have tested all of our plans in the township, and in every single community here in New Amsterdam. We have tested every plan and we have prioritised what is it the people of New Amsterdam want.
He disclosed to supporters his government’s plans to install street lights and CCTV cameras on every light post, along with substantial investments toward the upgrading of policing infrastructure to make communities much safer.
The president also pin-pointed one of his government’s flagship programmes: the 10-day part-time job initiative, branding it a success since its launch back in 2022. He promised that if re-elected, “we’re not only going to increase the salaries, we are going to expand the programme and upscale the job so you can have higher paying jobs.”
New Amsterdam currently has an overflow of part-time workers, as many have been without jobs, and many remain without.
Supporters were also assured that every level of service offered by the government will be available in the town.
Among other plans for the region, which include incentivising the development of the manufacturing and agro-processing zone at Palmyra, the president also revealed that there will be a municipal airport sharing the location, and reminded the gathering of the much-anticipated international stadium under construction there, and a power plant to also be installed.
Zeroing in on the town, the president questioned residents on the frequency of ministerial visits in the period 2015-2020 under the coalition government. “Compared to the last five years, every day there is a cabinet member in Region Six, every week there is a cabinet member in New Amsterdam,” he exclaimed.
“It is time New Amsterdam embrace this bold PPP/C future by voting overwhelmingly for the People’s Progressive Party/Civic.” To lay firm his claim, he highlighted the influx of contractors and businesses and the boom of infrastructure and recreational facilities within the town and the broader region.
With much passion, the PPP/C presidential candidate upheld his party as one which has been faithful to New Amsterdam, and noted that it is only fitting in a show of gratitude and honor that the town recounts same on September 1.
“You stand up with what you have, with who gave you what you have, you stand up and you make your mark, and you make your vote count. You stand up New Amsterdam. You do not betray those who invest and believe in you. You invest back in them. You support them, you lift them up, because they took you up!”
Sharing the stage with the president were Prime Minister, Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips and Minister with Responsibility for Finance and the Public Service, Dr. Ashni Singh.
Prime Minister Phillips labeled the incumbent as “a caring government.” Making contrast to the previous APNU administration, the prime minister told the crowd of residents that they were neglected. “They keep promising you and they failed to deliver.” His party, he stressed, has over the last five years facilitated the major improvements across critical areas in the region. The prime minister gave full assurances that should the life of the PPP/C government be extended; New Amsterdam will be fully wrested from APNU and be transformed. “We will ensure that you have a better life under the PPP/C, and that’s why we’re asking you tonight for your vote,” he pleaded.
For his part, the finance minister characterised the last five years of the PPP/C in office as an invasion of APNU’s New Amsterdam base, adding that with everything the party has accomplished, the town can no longer be deemed an APNU stronghold.
