Kaieteur News – The government of Guyana plans to co-invest with the private sector to establish facilities that would produce peritoneal fluids, saline and syringes for the local health sector and wider Caribbean.
This was announced at the commissioning of the new $6.6B Bath Regional Hospital in Region Five on Wednesday by President Irfaan Ali.
The President said his government will continue to invest until the country has the best health service that any citizen in the world can enjoy right here.
“As we continue on this journey of development, I also want to share with you some additional information. Peritoneal dialysis, we have 25 patients, imagine this, tell me which government in the world is doing this, 25 patients who receive care for a peritoneal dialysis and we are spending on those 25 patients alone on the fluids $150 million annually and yesterday (Tuesday) we decided that they too in addition to this $150M must benefit from the $600,000 annual grant,” he said in his remarks.
The President disclosed that discussions were held with the private sector about an investment of between US$15 million to $20 million to establish a facility in Guyana for the production of fluids including the peritoneal fluids and saline.
“So that we can produce it right here in Guyana for here and the rest of the Caribbean.” he added.
The Head-of-State said focus is being place on the building out of a biopharma industry, and the establishment of a syringe plant “to serve the entire CLAC region that is what we are talking about, that is what we would be co-investing in with the private sector.”
He noted that through the public-private partnership citizens would be better able to benefit from quality healthcare.
Back in March, Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony spoke of Guyana’s partnership with the European Union (EU). Recently, at a Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) in Barbados, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed among Guyana, Barbados and the EU for collaboration.
“The EU is going to fund this partnership and among the things that are in that partnership is to look at preparing Guyana to become a hub for manufacturing of pharmaceuticals and vaccines. We are looking at developing a stronger regulatory institution and with that institution when we certify something then it will be accepted by other jurisdictions,” the Health Minister said at the time.
Last year, the EU Ambassador to Guyana, René Van Nes said the EU hopes to help the Guyana develop a regulatory framework for the manufacturing of pharmaceuticals, which not only would meet the country’s needs, but that of the region and beyond.
