Kaieteur News – Vice President, Bharrat Jagdeo said Thursday, that diplomats who are returning home ahead of the 2025 elections were not recalled and are not home to campaign.
He explained that diplomats are politically appointed. According to him, under previous administrations like the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), some diplomats would return home during the election period.
“These diplomats aren’t necessarily foreign service staff, but rather individuals appointed by political parties to hold ambassadorial roles or other diplomatic positions. It’s common for them to come back around election time, although they aren’t always campaigning, and some may appear on platforms to show support,” he explained.
He explained that the diplomats usually return on their own accord and plan their activities independently.
“They aren’t specifically ordered to return for campaigning purposes, as the decision to participate in local political activities is voluntary. As the general secretary of the party, I didn’t direct anyone to return for campaign-related reasons, although election time is often seen as an exciting period for those involved,” he further clarified.
He continued, “It’s important to note that the campaign atmosphere we foster is different—it’s not about making the campaign bitter or divisive, but rather about engaging in a positive and energetic manner,” he added.
