Kaieteur Sports – Up and coming cyclist Alex Newton of KFC Evolution Cycle Club continues his march up the ladder. Newton out did some of his more season counterparts to win the third annual Rajkumar Churuman Memorial cycling road race.
The event which was held on Sunday along the Corentyne Coast in Berbice.
The race, which was sponsored by the Churuman’s Family of the Raj and Daughters Motorcycle and Cycle Store, was organized by the Flying Ace Cycle Club (FACC) of Berbice. The event begun around 09:30 hrs.
The 32 riders were sent on their way from in front of the Raj and Daughters Motorcycle and Cycle Store in Skeldon by Anita Churuman, Wife of the late owner.
From there the riders proceed along the Corentyne highway to the branch in Rose Hall Town before turning back to finish at its point of origin.
Newton was in top form as he won from a field of top rides to cross the finish line in a time of 2hrs 35 minutes 36.98 seconds.

Riding in second was Christopher Griffith, with Kwame Ridley third, Aaron Newton fourth, Robin Persaud occupied the fifth spot, Ajanni Cutting placed sixth, Segun Hubbard seventh with Jamual John eight.
Among the Juniors, Alex Newton was first with Ajanni Cutting and Alexander Leung occupying the other two spots.
In the veterans open category it was Kwame Ridley who won from Segun Hubbard and Kwame Fortune.
The veterans over 50 winner was Robin Persaud.
Aaron Newton again took top honours for the U23 cyclists with Mario Washington adjudged second.
The Prime Point prizes saw Christopher Griffith taking home three, while there were one each for Robin Persaud, Alex Newton, Jamual John and Segun Hubbard.
The race began at a blistering pace and with the sun and the heavy Corentyne breeze to contend with the riders had to be in top form.
Newton, was always in contention as he stayed in the breakaway group even as the lead changed hands on numerous occasions.
As the riders turned around at Rose Hall Town, it was Newton, Griffith and Ridley that broke away as they battled against one another and the elements in pursuit of top honours. In the end it was the younger legs of the U23 rider, Newton that prevail to the cheers and enthusiasm of those in attendance.
The event was coordinated Coach Randolph Roberts.
