Kaieteur News – Eighteen-year-old Travel Danies Hammer who was arrested on Tuesday for the murder of 16-year-old Reyna DePeazer, was on Friday remanded to prison. DePeazer was fatally struck by a stray bullet on Monday night at Mango Lane, East Ruimveldt, Georgetown. Hammer, of Trench Road, East La Penitence, appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before acting Chief Magistrate, Faith McGusty.
The accused was not required to plead to the indictable charge and was subsequently remanded to prison until August 20, 2025. According to a police statement, the incident occurred around 23:20 hrs, while DePeazer and a friend were sitting on a motorcycle, liming near another parked motorcycle. Hammer reportedly arrived on the scene in a white fielder wagon bearing registration number PYY 2896. “He then exited the car with a handgun in his hand, went up to the motorcyclist (next to the victim and her friend), and the two of them had a misunderstanding,” police said.”
In the heat of the argument, Hammer drew his gun and fired, with one of the bullets striking DePeazer in the neck and causing her to collapse. Hammer went into the car and fled the scene. “The victim was picked up by police ranks and escorted to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where she underwent surgery and later succumbed,” police said. DePeazer died while receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Around 01:00 hrs. the following day, Hammer was arrested by police on Mandela Avenue in the same vehicle used during the incident. He was arrested, cautioned, and taken into custody. A search of both the suspect and the car was conducted, however, no firearm was found.
