Mohamed promises COI into police handling of probe into Adriana’s death

Kaieteur News – The We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) political party, led by businessman Azruddin Mohamed, has pledged to invite the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to investigate the death of 11-year-old Adriana Younge, if elected to office. He also promised that within his first 100 days he will establish a Commission of Inquiry into the handling of the Case by the police.

This announcement was made during WIN’s inaugural press conference and manifesto launch held on Thursday at the party’s headquarters at 2702 Green Acres, Providence, East Bank Demerara. Adriana Younge went missing during a family trip to Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo, and her body was discovered nearly 20 hours later on April 24, 2025, in the swimming pool of the Double Day International Hotel. A post-mortem conducted by international experts on April 28 confirmed the cause of death as drowning. However, the circumstances surrounding her death have sparked widespread public outrage and skepticism, particularly regarding the investigation conducted by the Guyana Police Force.

Since the incident, Adriana’s family and members of the public have persistently called for the FBI to take over the investigation. Under WIN’s manifesto for children, the party has outlined a child protection plan including a plan named after Adriana. “Child Protection strengthening- Trauma-informed training for teachers, police and caregivers; duty to report legislation, national Adriana Alert System and stricter laws on abuse,” the manifesto stated.

Additionally, speaking at a public meeting in Parfaite Harmonie Region Three, Mohamed reiterated his stance, criticizing the current government for what he described as five years of broken promises, corruption, and victimization. “We are tired of five years of corruption, five years of promises, five years of lies, five years of victimization and most importantly Adriana Younge is from Region Three. We all know what transpired that night,” he said, referring to the day Adriana went missing. “But rest assure come the 2 of September we will have a government that care for the people,” he declared.

On several occasions Adriana’s family has voiced disappointment with the government’s decision to engage Leonard McCoshen, a retired Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) officer, to assist with the case, arguing that it fell short of their request for a U.S.-led investigation. In May, U.S. Ambassador to Guyana, Nicole Theriot, confirmed that the Government of Guyana had made no formal request for assistance from the FBI.
