Three strikes hit homes and a tent in Gaza City, killing at least 21 people, mostly women and children. The attacks come as the besieged territory faces extreme hunger and ongoing bombardment.
At least 10 have died of forced starvation in the past 24 hours in Gaza, bringing the death toll from hunger to 111, including at least 80 children, according to the territory’s Health Ministry.
Israeli forces continued bombarding Gaza as 109 aid groups called for action against Israel, warning that “mass starvation is spreading” across the enclave.
Dr. Rik Peeperkorn, the WHO’s representative for occupied Palestinian territory, has spoken out amid the vast food shortage and more than 1,000 people killed in Gaza while seeking food at the deadly GHF distribution points.
The attacks on aid seekers have turned the few remaining hospitals “into massive trauma wards”, he said.
“Mainly young boys and men shot in the head, the neck, the abdomen, the chest, the knees – horrific scenes,” Peeperkorn said. “There’s a way to stop this. The markets need to be flooded with food – you will stop the mass casualty incidents, the prices would go down, and people would have access to food.”
The food scarcity is so extreme that people can’t do their work, said Peeperkorn, including journalists, teachers, and even their own staff.
“Everyone is looking for food,” he said. “We even see it with our own staff … We struggle with access to water, access to food.”
The World Food Programme (WFP) has urged for increased food aid to Gaza as the hunger crisis plaguing the enclave has reached “new and astonishing levels of desperation”.
In a post on X, the WFP wrote that in Gaza, nearly one in three people is not eating for “days”.
“90,000 women & children need urgent malnutrition treatment. Food assistance is the only solution to stop starvation in its tracks. There’s no time to lose,” the organisation added.
Wednesday morning, more than 100 aid organisations warned that “mass starvation” was spreading across the Gaza Strip due to an Israeli siege on the number of aid trucks entering the enclave.
Mohammed Abu Mughaisib, deputy coordinator for Doctors Without Borders, also known as MSF, said the situation is “dramatically deteriorating” in Gaza with “everyone” facing acute hunger.
“It’s not only among the population who you see in the hospitals, it’s among our staff as well. The medical staff, the paramedics, everyone is really facing the same situation. There is no food, people are completely exhausted,” Abu Mughaisib told Al Jazeera from Khan Younis, southern Gaza.
“It’s a young population, more than 50 percent of Gaza are children and they need not just bread, they need real nutrition, they need food, they need eggs, milk, and this is not available since March,” he added, referring to Israel’s decision to impose a blockade on aid trucks.
He explained that there was also a high shortage of items entering the enclave, including drugs and supplements that they needed in their clinics.
