Kaieteur News – Canadian firm, Mako Mining Corp. has advanced its permitting efforts for the Eagle Mountain Gold project by making a submission of environmental application and project summary documents to the Environmental Protection Agency.
According to the document posted on the EPA’s website on July 13, it was stated that the Eagle Mountain, a mining exploration property planned to be developed in Region 8, Potaro-Siparuni.
Mako Mining holds 100% interest in the project which spans 4,784 hectares or 11,829 acres. The project is located in Region Eight (Potaro/Siparuni). Notably, the company plans to submit an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and mining licence application to Guyana’s Environmental Protection Agency by late 2025. Pending approvals, Mako intends to start construction by 2026, with first gold production from Phase 1 targeted for 2027. A feasibility study for Phase 2, which will target deeper fresh rock resources, is also planned.
Notably, the company said in its project summary that it is confident that the Eagle Mountain Project can provide substantial economic benefits, including job creation, infrastructure development, and increased revenue for the region.
Moreover, exploration-related work carried out at the Eagle Mountain Project between 2011 and 2023 by Mako includes infrastructure improvements, environmental data collection, topographic surveys, line cutting, trench and outcrop sampling, hand auger sampling, ground geophysical surveys, and reprocessing of existing geophysical data.
The project will entail a traditional open pit mining method has been selected using truck and shovel techniques. The mine will consist of several shallow and medium depth open pits. The project has two gold deposits, the Eagle Mountain and Salbora, as well as several other exploration targets.
A 2024 Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA) for Eagle Mountain Gold outlines that the project can produce 66,500 ounces of gold annually on average for 15 years, Life of Mine (LOM).
Mako Mining is pushing ahead with its Eagle Mountain gold project it acquired through its 2024 takeover of Goldsource Mines Inc. Mako inherited a resource base of nearly 1.2 million ounces (indicated) and 582,000 ounces (inferred).
Mako said that during the initial 4.5 years, only a small amount of drilling and blasting will be required as the mine plan calls for a focus on gold mineralisation hosted in soft-rock saprolite material. However, the company noted that there are areas of transition and fresh rock that will need to be mined to access planned saprolite. Mako explained that within the saprolite layer there are localized unweathered boulders of granodiorite and dolerite one metre in diameter or more which cannot be handled without blasting.
From the mid-point of year five to the end of the LOM plan, drilling and blasting will be used regularly to ensure that the transition and fresh rock can be loaded and hauled by mining equipment.
Notably, this publication had reported that Mako is hopeful that by 2026 it receives the necessary approvals from Guyanese authorities to begin construction on its Eagle Mountain Gold Project.
According to the company, US$1 million was spent in exploration and evaluation expenses during the first quarter of the year directed toward Eagle Mountain in Guyana. “Mako’s rapidly growing cash position will be used for the development of Eagle Mountain in Guyana, which we expect to be permitted for construction by Q2 2026,” the company had stated.
